~ the eulogy ~
peperonity was the kind of thing you used when a cheap feature phone was your entire internet. that was not me. by the middle of the 2000s i had a pc at home in ankara and ttnet on the line, and the mobile web over wap felt like a worse copy of something i already had a better version of. so i never had a reason to build a page on my phone.
peperonity ran out of berlin, a company called peperoni mobile and internet software gmbh, and it was one of the first places where you could make your own little mobile site from the handset itself. you built a page, other people visited it over wap, and a social network grew on top of all those pages.
its audience was never germany. the crowd was in india and indonesia and the rest of the markets where the phone showed up long before the home computer did. millions of pages in more than ten languages, a whole social web that most of the pc-and-broadband world never even glanced at. back then.

~ the origin ~
the reason it worked is the same reason mig33 worked in the same part of the world. for a lot of people the first machine that ever put them online was a phone, not a pc, and data was sold by the megabyte. in those days. peperonity fit that exactly, a page light enough to load over wap and simple enough to build with a numeric keypad.
~ the unraveling ~
the cheap smartphone and the app store took it apart. once whatsapp and facebook ran on the same phones that used to load peperonity, a hand-built wap page stopped being how anyone presented themselves. for whatever reason the people who ran their whole identity through the site just drifted onto the apps like everyone else.
~ the long tail ~
it hung on longer than you would guess, which is its own kind of eulogy. the shutdown came in july 2018, sixteen or so years in, with a quiet goodbye note from the people who had kept it running. by then it was a relic of a mobile web that the smartphone had already paved over almost everywhere.
