Ozy Media

2013 - 2021
dead us
ozy media was a digital media startup that ran a daily newsletter and a talk show hosted by its founder carlos watson, who booked big-name guests and threw a summer festival in central park. it looked like a rising media brand until september 2021, when the new york times reported that its chief operating officer had impersonated a youtube executive on an investor call. the company fell apart within a week. watson kept insisting it would survive, but the money and the trust were gone, and he was later convicted of fraud and sent to prison.

~ the goodbye ~

ozy media was a name in the american media-startup conversation that never crossed into mine. its whole run lines up with my thirties as an engineer in ankara, but it was an english-language newsletter and tv operation aimed at a us audience, and it had no reason to reach turkey. to be honest. i met the story only when it blew up, because the way it ended was loud enough to travel.

carlos watson and samir rao started ozy in september 2013, out of mountain view. watson had the resume, harvard and stanford law, cnn and goldman, and ozy sold itself as the smart outsider's media brand, the place covering the new and the next. it put out a daily newsletter and made a talk show watson hosted. it also ran a summer festival in central park with real headliners. on paper it was doing everything a modern media company was supposed to do.

the trouble was that a lot of it was inflated. in september 2021 the new york times reported that ozy's chief operating officer had pretended to be a youtube executive on a call with goldman sachs, talking up fake revenue to help raise money. back then. within days advertisers and board members walked, and on the first of october ozy announced it was shutting down. watson reversed himself almost immediately and swore it would reopen, but the brand never recovered. the site finally went dark for good in march 2023, right around the time the founders were charged.

~ the decline ~

the fraud was the headline, but the deeper problem was that ozy's numbers had been shaky for a long time. it claimed audience figures that outside observers could never quite find, and it kept raising money on the strength of a story that got further from the truth each round. the impersonated call was just the moment the gap became impossible to hide. once one number was proven fake, every other number was suddenly a question.

~ how it actually ended ~

this ended in a courtroom, which most dead media brands never do. to be honest. carlos watson was convicted of fraud in july 2024 and sentenced to nearly a decade in prison. he was ordered to pay back tens of millions, and a later commutation cut the sentence short. ozy is remembered less as a publication than as a case study in how far a confident founder could push a media story before the arithmetic caught up. the journalism it actually made barely gets mentioned anymore.
