~ the last words ~
overture sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. it was a B2B ad-tech company. i was a college kid running a 33.6k modem in ankara when goto.com first went live. i did not have a credit card to bid on the keyword "online flowers" in 1998 even if anyone had told me i could.
bill gross announced the goto.com idea at ted in february 1998. by july that year advertisers were paying up to one dollar per click for premium keywords. the model was straightforward: search results were ordered by how much the advertiser paid. anyone could bid in real time. for a while in 1999 and 2000, yahoo, msn, aol, altavista were all using goto's paid-listing infrastructure under the hood without telling end users where the ranking was coming from.
the company renamed to overture services on october 8 2001 partly because "goto.com" looked exactly like a domain link in print and got banner-blindness in ad copy. by 2003 it was profitable, generating about $1.3 billion in revenue, mostly from being yahoo's search monetization plumbing. that is when yahoo decided to just buy it. for $1.63 billion in cash and stock. the deal closed october 7 2003.
~ the record ~
| Born | 1997 (idealab spinoff), february 1998 (first live auction) |
|---|---|
| Peak | $1.63 billion yahoo acquisition (october 2003), ad infrastructure for yahoo plus msn plus altavista plus alltheweb |
| Killed | october 2005 (folded into yahoo search marketing brand) |
| Lifespan | 8 years from goto launch to overture retirement |
| Made by | Bill Gross / Idealab |
| Killed by | yahoo absorption after the 2003 acquisition, google adwords eventually outranking it |
~ the early days ~
the goto patent (US 6269361) was the bigger asset than the company. it described a system where the rank of a search result was determined by an auction. google had built adwords in 2000 without licensing it, and gross had been arguing with larry page about that since the late 1990s. some sources say bill gross literally pitched larry and sergey to merge goto with google in 1999. they said no.
overture sued google over the patent in april 2002. the case sat there while yahoo bought overture in 2003. in august 2004, four days before google's ipo priced, google settled by issuing yahoo 2.7 million shares worth roughly $300 million. the lawsuit was over by the time anyone outside finance noticed.
~ the actual end ~
the overture brand itself did not survive yahoo absorption. on october 6 2005 yahoo rebranded overture services to yahoo search marketing. the product survived as the back-end paid-search engine for yahoo through the 2009 microsoft search alliance, then for bing through 2010. then under the name yahoo gemini from 2014, then yahoo native from 2017. the same auction infrastructure goto.com built in 1998 is technically still serving ads on yahoo finance in 2026, four brand changes later.
~ the next chapter ~
overture's death is not really a death at the technical layer. it is a brand death. the original company is gone and the original product idea is now how every search ad market on earth works. google adwords, bing ads, baidu, yandex. amazon sponsored products. they all run keyword auctions because goto did it first and the patent kept everyone honest until the 2004 settlement. overture sits next to [[altavista]] and [[inktomi]] in the cluster of late-1990s search-infrastructure companies yahoo bought and folded into a brand layer that would itself be sold a decade later.
