OSzone.net

2001 - 2025
dead europe
a forum opened in november 2001 to answer questions about windows, hit three hundred thousand visitors a day around 2005, and then spent twenty years getting quieter while search engines learned to answer the same questions directly. the announcement went up on 23 july 2025. read-only from 1 august, dark from the evening of 2 september. nobody was surprised and everybody was sad.

~ the goodbye ~

OSzone.net opened on 3 November 2001 as a Russian-language site about operating systems, and became the place you ended up when Windows did something inexplicable and you searched in Russian for why. Articles, a software catalog and a very large forum where people who knew the registry answered people who did not. In its best years around 2004 to 2006 it was carrying something like 300,000 visitors a day.

I could not read it. That is the whole distance here: this is the Russian version of a site I did use, and the Turkish one had the same shape down to the furniture. Donanımhaber and frmtr were where you went in Ankara for the same reason, and I built forum signatures listing my hardware for exactly the same audience OSzone was serving in Moscow. Every country's engineering internet had one of these, and every one of them is dying on roughly the same schedule.

The decline was long and visible from outside. In October 2017 the administration announced the news section was finished, after about 20,000 published articles since 2007, and said plainly that traffic had fallen far enough that the section no longer paid for itself. By the 2020s the front page of oszone.net was serving the personal blog of Vadim Sterkin, the Microsoft MVP who had written much of the site's article output, which is a strange thing to find at the top of a domain that once had a staff.

On 23 July 2025 the closure notice went up. The forum would go read-only on 1 August and be switched off on 1 September. A thread was opened for people to say something in memory.

~ the breakout ~

The thing an OSzone-class forum had that no successor has is a searchable record of specific failures. Someone in 2007 posted the exact stop code you were seeing, someone else in 2009 answered it, and in 2016 you found that thread through Google and it worked. A commenter on the closure news put the whole business model in one line: it is easier now to just Google it than to correspond on forums. He meant it as an explanation and it also reads as the cause of death.

~ the slow part ~

Nobody killed OSzone. Broadband killed the local portal in general, and then search engines took the answer layer off it. A Russian forum where you had to register to see attachments could not compete with an answer that appeared without a login. Regulars had been watching it fade for a decade. One of the more bitter comments on the farewell thread blamed the culture instead, saying the old hands were dismissive of beginners and the beginners eventually found sites that were not.

~ the switch-off ~

The announced date was 1 September 2025 and the site missed it by a day. A regular posted on 3 September that oszone.net had still been working on the afternoon of the second and that by the evening neither the site nor the forum answered at all. The Internet Archive's last successful capture is 1 September at 04:16 and there is nothing after it, which lines up.

Somebody promised a mirror. Somebody else started scraping the forum to static HTML with eleven days left on the clock. As far as anyone can tell, neither exists.
