~ the goodbye ~
by the time nimbuzz made sense, i had mostly stopped needing it. the whole pitch was that it could hold every messenger you owned inside one app. it spoke msn and a dozen other protocols, so a phone could carry the chat life that used to live on a desktop. i had that chat life, on msn, through the university years in ankara. but nimbuzz found its peak on smartphones around 2012, and by then msn was already closing and the old protocols were going quiet.
the company started in the netherlands in the mid 2000s and moved its center to delhi in 2012, chasing the markets where it actually grew. that growth was real and large. by 2014 nimbuzz counted more than two hundred million registered users, most of them in asia and the middle east, on cheap android phones and older feature phones where a light free messenger beat paying for sms. new call telecom bought a controlling stake that year at a quarter-billion-dollar valuation.
then whatsapp happened, and the question nimbuzz answered stopped being a question. nobody needed one app to unify six messengers when everyone they knew was already on the same green one. nimbuzz did not get a funeral. it got a slow fade, updates thinning out, the app quietly leaving the stores, until by the end of the 2010s it was gone from the phones it had once been installed on by the hundred million.

~ the market it actually won ~
nimbuzz was never a western story, and that is the interesting part. its strength was the emerging-market phone, the prepaid line, the household where data was metered and every free kilobyte counted. in that world a messenger that ran light and cost nothing was worth installing, and nimbuzz was there before whatsapp took the same ground.
~ the long tail ~
for a while the name lingered in odd places, bundled into telecom deals and rebrandings that meant less each year. the product that mattered, the one that unified your chats on a nokia or an early android, belonged to a specific window. it opened when phones could finally do messaging but no single messenger had won yet. it closed the moment one of them did.
