~ the last words ~
i remember netvibes as one of the choices the tech blogs kept comparing against igoogle around 2007. i was on ttnet broadband by then, running feeds through google reader on the desktop, and the whole widget-dashboard category was already crowded with alternatives. netvibes was the european entry in that comparison. i tried the free tier for a stretch and never made it my start page, mostly because reader plus igoogle covered the same slot without asking me to switch.
tariq krim launched netvibes in september 2005 out of paris. the pitch was straightforward. an ajax-heavy personal start page where you could stack rss feeds and other widgets in one browser tab. by 2006 the site had picked up a lot of press coverage as the european web 2.0 startup of the moment. it was one of the sites the french tech scene kept pointing at when the question was whether europe had its own consumer-web story to tell.
the acquisition came in february 2012. dassault systèmes, the french industrial-cad giant, bought netvibes and folded it into its business-intelligence stack. the consumer dashboard stayed open for another decade but stopped getting real investment in the mid-2010s once the rss feed had faded and social platforms had taken over the same slot in the browser start page. netvibes coasted quietly through the whole 2015 to 2024 stretch.
~ the record ~
| Born | september 2005 by tariq krim in paris |
|---|---|
| Peak | one of the three big personal-dashboard products of the mid-2000s, alongside igoogle and pageflakes |
| Acquired | 9 february 2012 by dassault systèmes |
| Killed | consumer service retired 2 june 2025 |
| Lifespan | about 19 years 9 months |
| Made by | tariq krim, later dassault systèmes |
| Killed by | the rss dashboard as a category, plus dassault's shift to b2b intelligence tools |
~ the long fade ~
the rss dashboard as a product category started dying around 2011. facebook plus twitter took the ambient news slot. google shut reader down in 2013, which pulled the feed layer out from under the whole widget-dashboard genre. netvibes still worked but the reason to log in narrowed. dassault kept the site running as a b2b intelligence product, and inside the enterprise stack netvibes had a real second life, but the consumer edge was gone by the mid-2010s.
~ the actual end ~
in april 2025 dassault announced that the standalone netvibes consumer service would retire on 2 june 2025. the enterprise dashboard product would continue under the netvibes brand as part of dassault's 3dexperience line, the personalized start page was going away. that included the free rss reader that a small holdout of feed subscribers had kept using through the 2020s. on 2 june the login page redirected to the b2b marketing site and stopped answering personal account credentials.
~ the legacy ~
twenty years of personal start pages. the rss dashboard is not a shape the web has anymore. netvibes was the last major consumer version of it, sitting next to the already-dead google reader on the same category headstone. the widget grid on a browser homepage was a specific 2005-2012 aesthetic and it now exists mostly in archived screenshots plus a lot of nostalgia posts on the surviving feed-reader subreddits.
