~ the goodbye ~
mobli did not reach me. the vine-adjacent short-video app cycle passed me by in general, and mobli specifically was one of the ones i only heard about because of the celebrity investor coverage around 2012. by then i was in my late twenties, deep in engineering work, not building a photo feed for anyone.
the company was founded in 2010 by the israeli hogeg brothers, moshe and oded. still. emmanuel merali joined as third co-founder. it went public with a phone-first mobile app that let users tag photos and videos by interest, closer to instagram-plus-topics than to a straight instagram clone. early promotion was celebrity-heavy. leonardo dicaprio put in what was announced as a $4M investment (later reported to be much smaller). serena williams and lance armstrong were named in the same window. tobey maguire signed on separately, tied to a tropfest partnership.
the actual money was elsewhere. in september 2012 mobli closed a $22M series B led largely by kazakh businessman kenges rakishev. in november '13 mexican telco américa móvil, carlos slim's group, put in $60M more. peak install base was around 3M in mid-2012, and the goal set at that funding round was 10M. it never got there.
the layoffs came in may '16, with only the europe operation briefly retained. bankruptcy followed later the same year.

~ the gimmick ~
mobli's differentiator was interest tagging. photos and videos in the app were sorted by "channels" like sports and celebrity content. the pitch was that you were following a topic more than a person, closer to how twitter list-following works than to instagram's follow model. still. the format was ahead of its time in one sense and utterly wrong for the moment in another.
instagram had already normalized the person-first photo feed by 2012. vine hit six-second video in january '13 with a much tighter constraint that gave the format identity. mobli sat between them without owning either territory.
~ the decline ~
the celebrity money was the tell. by 2013 mobli was pitching itself less to users and more to potential acquirers, and every new round was announced with heavier celebrity presence than the last. the actual growth numbers did not track the funding growth. 3M installs was small in the shadow of instagram's 100M-plus, and staying small in that shadow meant getting starved of both users and advertisers.
by 2014 the core app was in maintenance and the company was cycling through pivots. none of them broke through. the layoffs of may 2016 were the closing note on a company that had raised roughly $86M in disclosed funding and never crossed the threshold that turns a photo app from experiment into daily habit. to be honest.
~ the funny part ~
moshe hogeg's post-mobli career included ownership of beitar jerusalem football club and a broad crypto portfolio. still. multiple investors later sued him over how the mobli money was spent. the israel-based times of israel covered the litigation extensively. the celebrity endorsement wave that helped mobli launch became, on the exit, the media hook that kept the shutdown from being quiet.
