Mobango

2006 - 2019

mobango was a uk-registered mobile content portal that ran out of london from 2006. you uploaded ringtones and wallpapers and small java games through a wap browser, and the same account worked from a pc on the regular web. mauj mobile, a subsidiary of the indian people group, bought it in 2010 and pointed it at the indian carrier deck where the j2me download habit lasted longest. mobango limited was struck off the uk company register on 22 october 2019. the domain has been offline since.

~ the obituary ~

mobango lived in the part of the mobile internet i could not reach from a 2008 nokia in turkey. it ran on wap browsers and j2me midlets, the file format you sideloaded onto a symbian phone over a usb cable or a bluetooth pair. its real audience was india and the gulf, where the operator-locked content stores were either too expensive or too thin and a free third-party portal beat them on selection.

the london company was incorporated in 2006 by fabio pezzotti. the pitch was a free upload-and-share portal for ringtones and small java midlets, with wallpapers and short 3gp clips added later. you registered on mobango.com on a pc and the same account worked over wap on wap.mobango.com from the phone. the file size cap was 10 mb per upload and the public catalog ran to over 200,000 items by the end of 2006.

mauj mobile, the indian media subsidiary of people group, bought the company in 2010. mauj already had distribution into the indian carrier deck and treated mobango as a low-cost user-acquisition layer for that market. by 2011 the economist listed mobango as one of the top ten app distribution platforms in the world. the user count was reported around 8 million on some sources and crept upward through indian carrier deals.

~ what really happened ~

the indian government blocked mobango for a stretch in march 2011 alongside typepad and clickatell, no public reason given. the platform survived the block but the regulatory weather around third-party mobile content portals kept getting worse through the early 2010s. android google play and apple app store were already absorbing the same wap-era distribution gap that mobango had filled, and carriers were dropping their own portals into the same space.

mobango limited filed its last full uk accounts for the year ending march 31 2017. it applied for voluntary strike-off on november 7 of that year, was restored by court order in february 2019 over unfinished paperwork, then re-applied for strike-off and was finally dissolved by the registrar on october 22 2019. the mobango.com domain held on for a while after that as a static catalog of old listings. by the time scamadviser scanned it in 2025 the site was marked offline.

~ what replaced it ~

the mobango era is the part of mobile history that gets edited out when people tell the iphone story. between 2005 and 2012 there was a real mobile economy running on java midlets and symbian sis files over wap, with billions of paid downloads moving through it. handango and pocketgear were the western names for the same shape of business. mobango was the london-mauj version that lived longest in the indian and middle-eastern carrier market.

what got buried with the wap-era app stores was the brief moment when a small uk company could ship a global mobile download portal without being a carrier or a phone maker. once apple and google standardized the device and the store layer in a vertical stack, that gap closed and never reopened.
