Mercedes-Benz mbrace

2009 - 2025
dead us
mbrace was mercedes-benz usa's connected-vehicle service, the layer that sat between the car and verizon's 3g network and gave you remote start, stolen vehicle location, automatic collision notification, sos. verizon shut its 3g network down at the end of 2025 and that took mbrace with it for every 2017 and 2018 mercedes still on the road.

~ the obituary ~

mbrace was us-only at the carrier layer. it ran on verizon's cdma 3g network through a small modem buried in the dashboard, and verizon had been telling its partners since 2019 that the network would be retired at the end of 2025. mercedes-benz usa did the math, decided not to build a 4g replacement for cars that were already eight years old, and set the service end date for 31 december 2025. i am writing this from ankara where mercedes never sold mbrace and where the carrier landscape went straight from gsm to lte without a meaningful cdma layer.

the cars themselves keep working. you can still drive a 2017 e-class today and it will not behave any differently on the road. what is gone is the layer that made the car feel like a connected appliance. the mercedes me app no longer talks to it. remote start from your phone in the morning is dead. the sos button by the rearview mirror still lights up but no longer reaches a call center, and stolen vehicle location is gone. the modem is hardware that no signal touches.

this matters past the us. it is the first mass example of an oem deciding that the embedded radio in a car not much older than a typical iphone is not worth a network refresh. honda link classic and lexus enform are in a similar position, with subaru starlink legacy following close behind. the connected-car category has been quietly building a graveyard since the 3g sunsets started in 2022 and mbrace is the largest single oem entry in it.

~ what mbrace was ~

mbrace launched in 2009 as the replacement for teleaid, mercedes-benz usa's earlier emergency-only service. roughly, mbrace added remote app control, point of interest search, concierge calling, drive2friend address sharing, vehicle status from your phone. it was the early version of what every car company now ships under a different name (bmw connected drive, lexus enform, gm onstar, hyundai bluelink). most of those have since moved to lte. mercedes did the lte refresh on newer cars under the mercedes me brand. mbrace was the cdma vintage left behind.

~ the day it died ~

verizon turned its cdma 3g network off for general consumer use on 31 december 2022. enterprise carve-outs kept some embedded modems alive through extended contracts and mercedes had paid for one of those extensions to bridge mbrace through to the end of 2025. on 31 december 2025 the bridge ended and the embedded modems in 2017 and 2018 cars went silent. owners who had prepaid for service past that date got a prorated refund mailed to them in early 2026.

~ what came after ~

every connected-car feature that depended on a phone-to-car link is gone: remote unlock, remote start, automatic collision notification, sos call, vehicle finder, stolen vehicle assistance, geofence alerts. honestly, third parties like mid city engineering started selling aftermarket modules that restore remote start through a different carrier. the rest of the features are gone for good unless the owner replaces the head unit, which most people will not do on an eight-year-old car.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
