Luminary

2019 - 2026

one hundred million dollars of venture capital went into a paid app for a medium whose whole distribution model was free and open. luminary launched on 23 april 2019 with more than forty originals and spent its first week watching publishers pull their shows off it. the app went dark on 30 september 2026 and the surviving shows now live on apple podcasts.

Luminary was going to be the Netflix of podcasts. Joe Purzycki and Matt Sacks founded the company in 2018 and raised $100 million before shipping anything. The app opened on 23 April 2019 with a paid tier holding more than forty exclusive originals. The money bought names. Trevor Noah went behind the subscription, and so later did The Midnight Miracle, the show Dave Chappelle made with Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey.

The promotional campaign that preceded the launch ran on the theme that podcasts do not need ads. Everybody whose podcast was paid for by ads read that, correctly, as an attack. Then the app arrived with a free tier that served other people's shows through Luminary's own proxy servers, which broke dynamic ad insertion and sent publishers listening data that was neither complete nor IAB compliant. It was also stripping the links out of show notes.

The New York Times pulled The Daily within days and Spotify pulled the Gimlet catalog, which took Reply All and Homecoming with it. The Joe Rogan Experience and Barstool Sports followed, and so did PodcastOne. Luminary dropped the proxy and apologized, but the week had already happened, and the app meant to be podcasting's new home had opened without most of podcasting in it.

~ eighty thousand people ~

Bloomberg reported in May 2020 that around 80,000 of the people who had tried the app were still paying for it. That is a rounding error against $100 million, and the company took another $30 million in funding the same month. By March 2022 a lot of the exclusives had not published an episode in six months. The chief executive had been replaced by then, and Chappelle's production company had put money in.

The business model is what kept this at a distance from me, not the map. Podcasts showed up in Turkey as the cheapest thing going, a file on an open feed that played in whatever app you already had, and a monthly charge in dollars for a tidier version of that read here as an American habit. Of the forty-odd originals, the only title I knew by name before writing this is the one the closing notice forwards to Apple.

~ the notice on the front page ~

The homepage today is 2,178 bytes of text on a black background. "After over 7 years, Luminary is discontinuing the use of its podcast app as of September 30, 2026." It tells you that listeners are not affected if they use Apple Podcasts or Spotify, points Guys We F****d fans at both, and gives a support email address for questions. The copyright line reads Luminary Media, LLC.

So the company is not gone, exactly. The shows it still owns go out through the two platforms it was built to compete with, and the subscription was the whole proposition. That is the part that ended on 30 September.
