Kuvalauta

2007 - 2010
dead europe
finland's imageboard for three years, run by somebody calling himself gabo whose real name has never been published. it sat inside the country's two hundred most visited sites and produced the kind of news that makes a hosting provider nervous, ending with a hundred and twenty thousand stolen passwords posted in march 2010. the service provider closed it on the last day of august. the word jonne outlived the site by so far that it is now in the finnish dictionary.

a finnish-language imageboard is a closed room by construction. you cannot lurk it without finnish, and there is no version of my 2007 where i was going to learn finnish to read anonymous posts. kuvalauta belongs to a category of dead site i can only reconstruct from other people's sources, which in this case means two wikipedias that disagree with each other about the founding date.

it opened in 2007, run by an operator known as gabo whose real name has still never been published, as the successor to an earlier finnish board called finnchan. the tagline it carried translates roughly as an art picture site for anonymous gentlemen, which is the joke every imageboard tells about itself. no registration. no accounts to ban. the random board passed a million posts on 15 october 2009 and two million in the early part of 2010, and by then the site was inside the two hundred most visited addresses in finland.

finland is five and a half million people. a top two hundred site there is not big by any international measure, and it is enormous relative to the population it draws from, which is the condition that makes a national board matter. everyone under twenty five who was online had either read it or knew somebody who did.

~ how it got noticed ~

in september 2009 a threat against the harju vocational school in jyväskylä was posted on kuvalauta. the school closed and the police seized computers. finland had already had two school shootings in the previous two years, so nobody in that country treated an anonymous threat as a joke, and the site went from a thing teenagers used to a thing the evening papers had a name for.

a month later a user in rovaniemi blew up a speed camera pole and had posted about the plan in advance, then the video went onto youtube. in march 2010 more than a hundred and twenty thousand passwords lifted from a breach of the quiz site älypää were published on the board, which got kuvalauta temporarily shut for the first time. three incidents in seven months, each one arriving at the hosting provider as a legal problem rather than a traffic problem.

~ the last day of august ~

the closure on 31 august 2010 was not a police order. it was a dispute with the service provider, which is how most boards actually die. hosting an anonymous imageboard is a business decision, and the provider does the arithmetic on whether your traffic is worth the letters. the day after it went off, a request for hosting quotes for kuvalauta.fi was posted publicly, which is the last documented thing anyone tried to do about it.

the users split into two successor boards, lauta.net and kotilauta, which merged on 20 february 2011 into the largest imageboard in finland. ylilauta came out of that line and is still running. so the audience survived intact and only the domain died, which is the normal outcome for this kind of site and the reason the shutdown never felt like an ending to anybody who was there.

~ the word it left ~

kuvalauta produced spurdo spärde, a deliberately badly drawn version of pedobear that escaped finland entirely and ended up on the far side of the internet wearing other people's politics. the site is also where the finnish web learned to make a stunt out of nothing. in 2010 its users pushed kari tapio's juna kulkee to the most streamed song in finland on spotify by leaving it looping overnight on their own machines.

the real inheritance is one word. jonne is an ordinary finnish boy's name. the owner of a site called jonneweb ran an advertisement pointing his users at kuvalauta, and the board started calling the arrivals jonnet. it spread off the board and then off the internet, and became the general finnish term for a graceless teenage boy. the institute for the languages of finland added it to the dictionary in 2018, eight years after the site that coined it was switched off by its landlord.
