jasc paint shop pro was the windows shareware photoshop alternative. robert voit started it as a gif2pcx file converter in august 1990 in minneapolis. jasc inc grew it from a single-purpose utility through the shareware-cd 90s into a full graphics editor by version 5 in april 1998. corel bought jasc on 14 october 2004 and rebranded the product as corel paintshop pro. the eden prairie office where the original code lived closed on 28 november 2007.

~ the eulogy ~

jasc paint shop pro was on every windows pc i touched in turkey between '98 and the early 2000s. either a real registered copy from a shareware cd, or more often a downloaded build with a keygen the owner had forgotten about by the time you sat down at the machine. the alternatives were either pirated photoshop on a heavy install, or the limited mspaint tools that came with windows. psp was the middle path that everyone defaulted to.

robert voit started it in august 1990 in minneapolis as a single utility called gif2pcx, a converter for moving images between the compuserve gif format and the pcx format that was standard on dos. the conversion utility grew. by paint shop pro 3 in 1995 it was a full bitmap editor with layers planned for a later version. version 5 shipped on 6 april 1998 with layers and cmyk color and was the version that became the default for windows graphics work outside the professional studio tier.

the shareware model was the engine. you downloaded the trial from a shareware cd or from tucows and ran it for thirty days. then either paid the registration fee or kept running it past the expiry. jasc shipped real product releases on a roughly annual cycle, where photoshop on cd was multiple hundreds of dollars and required a real budget for a home user. psp was tens of dollars and the gap in functionality at the home-pc tier was small enough not to matter for what most people were doing.

~ how it landed ~

psp arrived right when consumer digital photography was scaling. by '99 a usb-attached scanner and a 1-megapixel digital camera were both within reach for the home market. people had photos they wanted to crop and email to relatives. they did not have a thousand dollars for photoshop. psp filled the gap. for a stretch of about five years it was the photo-editor windows users actually had installed.

the file format was also useful..psp files saved your layers in a way that did not roundtrip into photoshop, but the export to.jpg or.png was clean and predictable. for someone making forum signatures on donanimhaber or web banners for a free hosted site, the workflow was complete without ever needing to touch the adobe tool. that was the whole pitch.

~ what it became ~

corel announced the acquisition of jasc software on 14 october 2004. corel had been hunting for a windows raster editor to complement coreldraw on the vector side and corel photo-paint on the raster side that nobody was buying. jasc had the brand and the user base. the deal closed quickly. the first rebranded release was corel paint shop pro x in 2005. the jasc logo and the.jasc download page redirected to corel-branded successors within months.

the eden prairie office in minnesota where the original psp code had been written closed on 28 november 2007. development moved to corel's california offices and to china. the team that had built the product over fourteen years dispersed.

~ the day it died ~

the brand survived in name only. corel paintshop pro still ships in 2026 as a windows photo editor in the corel portfolio, but the jasc-branded product as it existed through psp 9.01 in september 2004 ended cleanly with the acquisition. anyone who used psp 7 or psp 8 on a 2001 windows-me machine to crop photos for an msn profile remembers a specific product, not the corel successor. that product is gone. the windows shareware-photo-editor category that psp defined for a decade has no living equivalent.
