iBibo

2007 - 2015
dead asia
ibibo launched in january 2007 in gurgaon as an indian social network funded by naspers, the south african media group. ashish kashyap built it as the local answer to orkut, with profile pages, games, and a points system. it never broke past orkut in india's social-graph race, and once facebook arrived in 2009 the consumer brand bled out. the company kept the ibibo name on its corporate gateway, pivoted into goibibo and redbus for travel, and the social network was effectively over by 2015 before makemytrip absorbed the group in january 2017.

~ the goodbye ~

ibibo sat in the part of internet history i can read about but cannot personally remember. it was an indian social network with naspers money behind it, launched january 2007, and the only reason i ever heard the name was through the press notes around the makemytrip merger almost a decade later. by then the brand was a travel umbrella, not a social network, and the consumer story had quietly closed.

the founder was ashish kashyap, who started ibibo in gurgaon after stints at google india. the financial backing came from naspers, the south african holding company that also held stakes in tencent and in mail.ru, and the strategic logic was the same one naspers was running across other regions: own a local social platform before the global ones get traction. orkut was already dominant in india at the time. facebook had not yet been opened to non-college users worldwide. ibibo was the local-language indian-coded alternative, with profile pages, friend graphs, casual games, and an internal points currency that you earned by inviting people.

the consumer brand never broke past orkut. facebook launched its india push around 2009 and the local social-network race was over within two years. ibibo pivoted to gaming, then to travel, then to a corporate gateway page in january 2013, by which point the social half of the product was effectively over. goibibo for hotels and flights launched in 2009, redbus was acquired in 2013, and the company spent the following years rebuilding itself as a travel aggregator. by 2015 the ibibo name only survived as the parent-group label. on january 31 2017 makemytrip bought 100 percent of ibibo group from naspers in a $1.8 billion all-stock deal, ending the corporate arc.

~ how it landed ~

the launch came at a moment when the indian middle-class internet was just shifting from cybercafes to home broadband. orkut was the assumed default for the english-speaking college and office crowd. hi5 had a foothold among teens. ibibo was pitched on local relevance: hindi support, india-coded gaming, a currency system that rewarded the kind of viral invitation loops that worked well in low-bandwidth environments. naspers had seen the same pattern work in russia and china and bet the india version would follow.

~ the decline ~

the cracks were obvious by 2009. facebook started growing fast in indian metros once the english-language interface and the open registration model arrived. orkut was already the entrenched incumbent and now had a global successor coming at it. ibibo's points-and-games loop kept some engagement going in tier-two cities but the social-graph network effect was settling globally and a local platform without messaging dominance had nowhere left to grow. the company stopped investing heavily in the consumer social product after 2010 and started moving engineering toward travel.

~ what it became ~

the corporate group survived by becoming something else. goibibo for travel bookings, redbus for inter-city buses, ryde for cabs. by january 2013 the ibibo.com home page was a corporate gateway pointing at those brands rather than a social-network login. the makemytrip merger in january 2017 folded all of it into india's largest online travel agency. the social network had no funeral notice. the brand just moved on.
