~ the goodbye ~
This site already had a grave for Stand News before it had one for House News, which puts the two of them in the wrong order. House News came first. Stand News exists at all because House News closed, and the second death only reads correctly once you know that the story had already been interrupted once.
It went up as a Facebook page on 6 July 2012 and as a website on the 28th of that month. Four people founded it, with Tony Tsoi as the principal investor and the essayist Leung Man-tao among the others. The model was borrowed openly from the Huffington Post: aggregate what the rest of the Hong Kong press had published, then hang a large volunteer bench of columnists off the front page. It employed almost nobody to report.
That worked faster than anyone involved seems to have expected. By June 2014 the site was pulling roughly 300,000 unique visitors a day, ranking 57th in Hong Kong on Alexa, with more than 230,000 followers on the Facebook page that had preceded the site itself. In a city of seven million people those are enormous numbers for a two-year-old publication with no newsroom.
None of it converted. House News never recorded a profitable month across two years. Advertisers did not pull out, according to Tsoi, because advertisers had never come in. Being read by everyone and being safe to be seen next to are separate things, and the second one was the one that mattered to the people buying banner space.
I read none of this while it was happening. It published in Chinese for a city I have never lived in, and in 2014 what I knew about Hong Kong came through the same wire copy everybody else in Ankara got. What survives the language barrier is the shape of the thing: an outlet with the entire audience and none of the revenue, closed by its own owner rather than by anybody with a warrant.

~ the day it died ~
The notice went up at 17:06 on 26 July 2014, a Saturday afternoon. There was no wind-down period and no warning to the contributors. Readers who reloaded the front page an hour later got the statement instead of the site.
The stated reason was fear, said plainly enough that it was quoted in that form everywhere afterward. Tsoi described a climate in which people arguing for democracy were being tracked and smeared, and described a personal calculation about crossing into the mainland for the other businesses under the same ownership. The financial argument was there too, but it sat second in the statement and it was framed as the thing that removed any reason to absorb the first.
~ what a chilling effect actually looks like ~
Nobody raided House News. No court ordered it closed and no editor was arrested. This is what makes it worth a grave separate from the one already written for its successor. The whole mechanism was an owner reading the room and deciding the exposure was not worth carrying, and the mechanism worked without anyone having to be told to use it.
That is harder to write about than a police raid, because there is no document to point at. What exists is a notice posted on a Saturday afternoon, and 300,000 daily readers who found out at the same moment as everybody else.
~ what came after ~
Five months later, on 30 December 2014 and with the Umbrella Movement having filled the intervening autumn, Tsoi opened Stand News in the same space. The structure was deliberately different: a non-profit funded by reader donations rather than a business looking for advertisers, which removed the exact pressure that had been given as the second reason for closing.
It bought seven years. Stand News was rated the most credible online outlet in the city by university surveys in 2016 and again in 2019, and it was shut on 29 December 2021 by two hundred national security officers rather than by a notice from its owner. Both endings are in the archive here now, in the order they happened.
