~ the obituary ~
hospitality club was for the kind of traveler who slept on a stranger's couch to save money and meet people. that was not the way i traveled, and in the early 2000s i was a student in turkey, not someone flying around with a backpack looking for a free bed abroad. so this one sat outside my orbit from the start, a thing i understood the shape of without ever joining.
veit kühne started it in koblenz, germany in july 2000 after a trip through south america, and the rule was simple: you host people, people host you, and nobody pays for the bed. it was a gift economy with a message board attached. it worked well enough that it reached over half a million members in two hundred countries, years before couchsurfing existed to make the same idea famous.
being first did not save it. the club stayed a loosely run one-founder operation with no real legal footing and little transparency about how it was managed. couchsurfing showed up in 2004 with a slicker site and a stronger community feel, and by 2007 the search traffic had already tipped the other way. hospitality club kept running on a shrinking base of loyal members until the site quietly dropped offline in april 2022.

~ how it landed ~
the pitch landed hardest with the exact people you would expect: budget travelers and students on gap years, the sort who treated a stranger's spare room as an adventure rather than a risk. it built real trust systems for its time, with member references and encouraged passport verification, at a point when meeting internet strangers still sounded reckless to most people.
~ the actual end ~
there was no lawsuit and no acquisition, just erosion. every year a bit more of the membership went dormant or moved to couchsurfing and later to bewelcome, the offshoot some members founded in 2007 after internal fights. by 2017 only about a third of the accounts were still active. the ending was less a shutdown than a network slowly emptying out until keeping the lights on stopped making sense.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
paid once through stripe. payments are handled by OÜ Lakeview, the small company that keeps rip.so running. the money pays for the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
