Google Notebook

2006 - 2012
dead
google notebook was the clip-and-save tool that lived between google search and gmail. development stopped on 14 january 2009. the service kept running unmaintained until july 2012, when google finally killed it and exported every notebook to google docs.

~ the goodbye ~

google notebook showed up in my browser around 2007. the clip-this-page extension lived right above the bookmarks bar, with a "note this" link injected into every google search result. you highlighted text, clicked the icon, and the snippet landed in a notebook with the source url attached.

marissa mayer announced it on 10 may 2006 at google press day. five days later, on 15 may, the service went live at google.com/notebook. extensions shipped for firefox and ie. there was no mac client and no android app. anything beyond what the browser could do was out of scope. that was the entire product.

for researchers and habit-hoarders this was the lightweight web-scrapbook tool that did not need an account on a third-party service. the data stayed inside the google account you already had. evernote launched a public beta the same year, in june 2006. evernote bet on the desktop client; google bet on the inline button inside search results. evernote won.

~ the decline ~

on 14 january 2009 google announced that active development on notebook had stopped. existing data stayed accessible. no new accounts could be created. the team had been folded into other projects, and the product entered the long zombie phase that often precedes a google shutdown.

by 2010 the "note this" link had quietly disappeared from search results. the firefox extension stopped working when firefox bumped its version. the ie extension fared no better. notebook still existed but only as a dormant data silo holding whatever you had saved before 2009.

~ the day it died ~

google announced the final shutdown in july 2011. users had a year to export. in july 2012 every remaining notebook was migrated into google docs as a regular document, with the snippets preserved as text and the source urls preserved as hyperlinks. the notebook tab on google.com went away.

eight months later google launched google keep on 20 march 2013. keep was a fresh start: card-based and mobile-first, with proper sync from day one. notebook was the failed prototype that came too early.

~ what remains ~

the "note this" link inside search results was the part nobody else copied. it embedded a save-this-snippet action right inside the workflow where you found the snippet. modern ai tools have rediscovered the same pattern fifteen years later by injecting save buttons into chat output. the notebook idea was right. the year was wrong.
