google helpouts was a marketplace that connected paying users with experts for live video consultations through a hangout. it launched in november 2013 with a catalog of english-speaking providers across categories like cooking or homework help. it never grew. google closed it after seventeen months.

~ the obituary ~

the first time i heard of google helpouts was during catalog research years after it had closed. that is not the usual story for a google product i would have known about. helpouts launched in november 2013, when i was deep in computer engineering work and at least loosely tracking new google services. the difference is that helpouts was tied to english-speaking experts only. the provider side of the marketplace required you to be a native english speaker from a short list of approved anglophone countries. that ruled out the entire turkish supply pool. the consumer side technically worked from anywhere, but the catalog you saw was all north american providers selling lessons in english.

the consumer pitch was that you opened helpouts.google.com and browsed categories like cooking or homework help, then booked a slot with someone who would meet you on a hangout for a real-time video consultation. providers set their own rates, either per minute or per session. google handled the payments through google wallet and offered a 72-hour money-back guarantee. integration with google calendar took care of the scheduling.

the marketplace shipped with around a thousand providers and an internal expectation that it would do for live video consulting roughly what youtube had done for video. it did not. it ran for seventeen months. on 20 april 2015 google closed it.

Killed bykilled-by-google standard: did not grow at the pace expected

~ what it was ~

at a category level helpouts was google's bet on the realtime side of expert knowledge, separate from the asynchronous side that google answers had already failed at a decade earlier. the underlying tech was thin: helpouts was essentially a search and payments layer stitched on top of hangouts. the user experience landed pretty clean. supply was where the product never came together.

~ why it died ~

the shutdown post said the simple thing: it had not grown at the pace google expected. that line is the killed-by-google template, used on everything from buzz to reader. helpouts in particular had a chicken-and-egg supply problem. high-quality experts did not want to spend their time waiting for bookings on a thin marketplace. the available providers skewed toward people willing to do anything for early visibility, which is not a reassuring vibe when you are paying for medical advice. google could not square the marketplace economics fast enough to break out, and the consumer side never developed the habit. it ended quietly. all data was offered for export and all payouts were settled, then the page went away. by the time covid made live video consultations into a real category five years later, helpouts was already off the map.
