Flipagram

2013 - 2018
dead us
flipagram turned a set of photos into a short video set to music, and it hit number one in the us app store within a week of its november 2013 relaunch. bytedance bought it in february 2017 for the music-synced short-video mechanic and the cleared audio rights. by april 2018 the app had been rebranded to vigo video, and it was pulled from the app store that july. vigo itself closed in october 2020 as bytedance consolidated everything behind tiktok.

~ the goodbye ~

flipagram was a us app store event. it went to number one there within a week of its 2013 relaunch, in a store i was not watching the same way from ankara. the pitch was small and clear, turn a set of photos into a short video set to music. for a year it was one of the most downloaded apps in america. i knew it the way i knew a lot of these, as a name in tech headlines rather than an icon on my phone.

flipagram started in 2012 as a side project and got its real launch on november 18 2013 as a free app, built by farhad mohit and josh feldman with a small team in los angeles. the slideshow format was easy to understand and easy to share out to instagram and facebook, which is where most of the growth came from. teenagers used it to make montages set to whatever song was big that month. the music was the hook and, later, the problem, because licensing music for user videos at scale is expensive and legally messy.

the thing flipagram had that turned out to matter most was music-synced short video with cleared audio rights. that is the core mechanic tiktok is built on. bytedance noticed.

~ what it became ~

bytedance acquired flipagram in february 2017. at first the app kept its name. then bytedance folded it into its overseas video strategy. in 2017 the global version became vigo video, and by april 2018 the us flipagram app was rebranded to vigo video too, refocused on fifteen-second clips. the flipagram app was pulled from the app store on july 17 2018. the name was gone. the technology and the music-rights work did not disappear, they were absorbed into the pipeline bytedance used to build tiktok out of its musical.ly purchase the same year.

~ the long tail ~

vigo video itself did not last either. bytedance shut it down worldwide on october 31 2020 as it consolidated everything behind tiktok. so flipagram died twice, once as a name when it became vigo in 2018, and once as a product when vigo closed in 2020. later reporting added an uncomfortable footnote, that bytedance had allegedly used fake accounts seeded with content scraped from instagram and snapchat to make flipagram and its successors look busier than they were. the slideshow app that a lot of american teenagers made real memories on became, in the corporate story, a set of assets and a growth-hacking case study.
