FEARnet

2006 - 2014
dead us
fearnet was a us-only thing at the cable-licensing layer. comcast plus lionsgate plus sony pictures launched it on halloween 2006 as a horror-focused video-on-demand service with around 1500 hours of horror cinema and original series. the linear cable channel followed in october 2010. when comcast bought out its two partners in april 2014, the horror catalog got folded into nbcuniversal's existing chiller channel and the fearnet brand was killed on july 30 of that year. nbcuniversal kept the chiller brand alive for another three years before that one died too in 2017.

~ the eulogy ~

fearnet was a us-only thing at the cable-licensing layer. for whatever reason, no turkish carrier had a horror-genre vertical channel slot in 2006, and the same content was already reaching turkey through pirated dvd rips and (later) p2p torrents anyway. by then i was 22 and at university in ankara, downloading hostel and saw sequels off of demonoid and turkish trackers rather than waiting for them to show up on cable. the whole premise of a 24-hour horror cable channel did not apply to a market where the horror audience was already on bittorrent for whatever it wanted.

for some reason, fearnet was set up as a three-way joint venture between comcast (the largest us cable operator at the time), lionsgate entertainment (the saw and hostel franchise owner) and sony pictures entertainment (which brought in part of the screen gems horror back catalog). honestly, the launch on halloween 2006 was not a linear cable channel yet. anyway, it was a video-on-demand service running on comcast's vod infrastructure, with around 1500 hours of horror films and series available at launch. the linear 24-hour cable channel only came later, on halloween 2010, after the vod footprint had proven the audience was there.

the channel's identity was specific. by then, the programming bench was lionsgate's horror back catalog (saw, hostel, the haunting in connecticut) plus sony's older horror titles plus an aggressive licensing posture against the european horror catalog that the broader cable channels would not touch. for whatever reason, fearnet aired around 350 full-length feature films a year at peak plus a small slate of original series, including the holliston sitcom (joe lynch and adam green, 2012-2013) and the fear clinic web-to-tv conversion. the channel was never huge in carriage terms but had a recognizable identity inside the us cable lineup as the place that would actually run uncut horror cinema late at night.

~ how it landed ~

for whatever reason, the vod-first launch in 2006 was an honest read of where the horror audience actually was. anyway, horror fans had been one of the earliest cable audiences to embrace dvd box-set buying in the early 2000s and were already used to consuming the genre as a catalog rather than a scheduled broadcast. fearnet's first four years on comcast vod let it test which titles got pulled most often before committing to a 24-hour linear schedule.

the october 2010 linear-channel launch ran on a mix of comcast-owned and external cable systems. for some reason, the channel never got onto every major us cable operator's basic tier (it was mostly a digital-tier or premium-tier carriage situation), which is the structural problem that would catch up with it later. by then, the small carriage footprint made it hard to justify the joint-venture overhead from three different corporate parents.

~ the unraveling ~

for some reason, by 2013 the three-way joint venture was no longer working for any of the partners. lionsgate had its own ott ambitions (the streaming push that eventually became part of the starz tv catalog) and sony had its crackle ad-supported streaming play. comcast was trying to consolidate its cable holdings under nbcuniversal after the 2011 acquisition of that company. by then, the chiller channel that nbcuniversal already owned (launched in 2007 as a horror-and-suspense cable channel) was directly competing with fearnet inside the comcast family.

honestly, the math was obvious. comcast bought out the lionsgate and sony stakes in april 2014 and announced that fearnet's programming would get folded into chiller, with the higher-tier horror titles moving to syfy. the fearnet brand went dark on july 30 2014, around seven years and nine months after the halloween launch.

~ what really happened ~

for some reason, the irony of the consolidation is that chiller itself lasted only another three years before nbcuniversal killed that brand too on december 31 2017. anyway, the horror-cable vertical that comcast had been trying to assemble across both fearnet and chiller effectively gave up by 2018, with the surviving titles going onto syfy's late-night schedule and onto the various nbcuniversal streaming services that eventually became peacock.

fearnet.com survived as a horror-news website for a brief period after the channel shutdown but was eventually folded into the syfy wire editorial brand. by then, the original fearnet on-air talent and original-series catalog largely scattered. the holliston sitcom got revived briefly on the cinemax streaming platform before disappearing again. the fearnet logo (the bold red letter pair with the cross-bone underline) shows up occasionally on horror-cinema retrospectives as a reminder that the us cable horror channel was a real thing for around eight years.
