Fantage

2008 - 2018
dead us
a kids' virtual world that ran for ten years out of a fort lee new jersey office, backed by nexon money, with a customizable avatar and a town map and minigames you could only fully access if your parents bought an emembership. closed at half past midnight on a sunday in july with a farewell party screen and no recoverable account data.

~ the obituary ~

fantage opened to the public on march 17 2008 from a fort lee new jersey office that called itself fantage inc. nexon, the korean game publisher behind maplestory and dungeon fighter online, put strategic investment money into it in 2009 and 2010 and held a quiet stake through most of its run. the front end was flash. you logged in as a customizable little chibi avatar with anime eyes, you walked around a top-down isometric town, you played minigames, you chatted in pre-approved phrases, and your parents got an upsell for emembership which unlocked the better clothes and the bigger map zones.

by december 2014 the registered account count was over thirty million. concurrent players were never that high. the model was free signup, freemium emembership, and a heavy reliance on cosmetic items as the engagement loop. it sat in the same bracket as stardoll and club penguin, with a slightly more anime-coded avatar style and a userbase that skewed canadian and american rather than european. it was not as famous as club penguin and it never picked up a non-english localization that made it dent any other region.

on may 17 2018 fantage inc announced that the game would close. the date stamped on the announcement was final. the shutdown happened at 12:36 in the morning eastern daylight time on july 1 2018, two weeks after the announcement window closed. there was a farewell party event in the days before. the game ran a countdown. when the timer ran out the servers turned off and the account data was not recoverable. wikipedia documents both the announcement and the shutdown timestamp.

this was not my world. in 2008 i was twenty four, finishing my computer engineering degree, and the kids' virtual world i would have noticed if i had been ten years younger was habbo hotel, which had a turkish localization, which fantage never did. fantage sat in the part of the kid web that was canadian-coded and american-coded and never crossed a language border into turkey at any scale i could see. i am writing this from search records, not memory.

~ what it actually was ~

technically fantage was a flash mmo with a custom client wrapper and a server architecture that supported maybe a few thousand concurrent users per shard. the world had named zones. you could buy a pet. you could decorate your room. there was a stars currency for free users and an ecoins currency for paying users. the minigames included a top-down racing game and a sketch-and-guess title in the same vein as draw something.

the customization layer was the real product. you spent your tokens on hair, eyes, outfits, and seasonal items that rotated out, and the rotation created a small collector economy where the kids who had logged in for the october 2011 halloween event had something the april 2014 joiners could not get. this is the same loop fortnite later ran at industrial scale. fantage was running it on twenty cents of cosmetic content per ecoin.

~ the shutdown ~

the may 2018 announcement did not give an exit reason. flash was being deprecated by adobe with a hard end-of-life set for december 31 2020 and every flash-based kid game was looking at the same wall. running the existing fantage client past the flash sunset would have required a full rewrite. fantage inc did not have the scale to justify that engineering. the company chose to close the gate rather than spend the money to rebuild.

the wikipedia page preserves the exact close timestamp of 12:36 am edt on july 1 2018, which is precise enough that someone was watching the kill switch with a clock. the farewell party screen is the last memorialized state of the game world. there has been no fantage classic relaunch, no private server cluster that picked up the protocol, and no reported plan to reopen.
