Etsy Wholesale

2014 - 2018

etsy wholesale was the experiment where the craft marketplace tried to grow up into a b2b channel and ran into the same wall every consumer marketplace finds when it goes pro. five thousand of the two million sellers signed up. most of those moved less than ten thousand dollars a year through it. the math did not hold and the new ceo did not pretend otherwise.

~ the obituary ~

etsy wholesale was a b2b layer bolted onto a c2c craft marketplace. independent makers on one side, boutique retail buyers on the other, etsy in the middle taking a cut. it launched in august 2014 as an invite-only beta and opened up over the following year. the pitch to sellers was clean: skip the trade shows, skip the road trips with sample cases, get matched to stockists from the same dashboard you already use for retail orders.

by the time the shutdown notice went out on 30 may 2018 the numbers had been honest for a while. five thousand of etsy's roughly two million active sellers were using the wholesale side. only a small fraction of those moved more than ten thousand dollars a year through it. the platform never threw off enough margin to justify its own engineering team, account management, or buyer-acquisition spend. josh silverman had taken over as ceo a year earlier after activist investors pushed for cost discipline. cutting the wholesale platform was an easy line item.

i never had a reason to look at etsy wholesale from ankara. small-craft b2b commerce in turkey runs on whatsapp groups and istanbul wholesale district visits, not on a brooklyn-headquartered marketplace's b2b spinoff. the closest i got to the etsy ecosystem was browsing handmade leather notebooks once on the consumer side, before clicking away from the shipping cost.

~ how it landed ~

the launch pitch came with proof-of-concept events. pop-up shops at macy's herald square in late 2014, a partnership with whole foods to put etsy wholesale products into select stores. the press coverage that fall was warm. the model resembled faire (which would launch in 2017) and the older trade-show circuit. etsy was first to bring it onto a familiar consumer brand's dashboard.

the catch was the seller economics. etsy's average craft seller priced for retail margins, not wholesale. asking a knitter who lists hats at thirty dollars to halve that for a boutique buyer meant the same labor for less money. the sellers most willing to play were the ones already past hobby scale. there were not many of them.

~ the slide ~

buyer demand never matched the seller signup pace. boutique buyers wanted assortment, fast restocks, terms. independent makers wanted predictable repeat orders that would not eat their entire studio capacity. the gap between those two needs was where the platform sat, and the gap stayed open.

by early 2018 the wind-down was an open question internally. silverman's cost review made the decision official in may. last new purchase orders went in on 28 june 2018. the site stopped accepting orders on 31 july and the facebook group for affected sellers filled with eleven thousand members trading direct-stockist contacts.

~ the long tail ~

faire took the model and ran with it after etsy stepped away. by 2020 faire was the default b2b platform for the same boutique buyer that etsy wholesale had been trying to reach. the difference was that faire built around the buyer's purchasing rhythm and not around the c2c marketplace's existing seller base.
