~ the goodbye ~
elitesingles was a 2010s product i missed for the obvious reason. i was already married by then and had not been on a dating site in years. the elite filter was also one i could not have honestly clicked. the site asked you to confirm you held a university degree as part of the signup. that is the kind of marketing positioning a turkish engineer my age was old enough to read as filler. i was on the eDarling-era ads in google's display network around 2010 for context, the lookalike that affinitas built before elitesingles existed.
the product was a 2013 launch out of berlin. affinitas, the company david khalil and lukas brosseder founded in 2008, had built eDarling in german since 2009. elitesingles was the english-language version of the same playbook. the signup ran a personality test of around 200 questions scored against the big five inventory (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism) plus a long demographic block. the matching engine returned three to seven profiles a day instead of letting you swipe a feed. the price point was at the high end of subscription dating, around fifteen to twenty dollars a month for a six-month plan.
the US launch followed in 2014. by 2016 affinitas reported 40 million users across the portfolio (elitesingles, eDarling, attractive world). elitesingles itself reported over 13 million users across 19 countries by the late 2010s. spark networks, the US-listed company behind christianmingle and jdate, merged with affinitas in november 2017 and took the berlin brands under the spark portfolio. the combined company kept trading on the NYSE through 2024 then delisted. on january 16 2026 spark networks services GmbH filed for insolvency in berlin after MGG investment group pulled the credit line. an interim insolvency administrator was appointed. on april 28 2026 users got an email. the service would close on april 30. accounts, profiles, matches and conversations were deleted on schedule.

~ what the personality test was selling ~
elitesingles ran the longest questionnaire of any major paid dating site in the 2013-to-2025 window. you sat through around 200 multi-choice questions on a five-point likert scale. the back end scored you on the big five inventory and on a set of partner-preference axes (do you want someone with the same education level, the same religion, the same income bracket, the same age). the result was a percentage-match score against every other profile in your country. the pitch to the user was that the algorithm did the filtering work so the user got curated profiles instead of a swipe feed.
the elite framing was marketing on top of the algorithm. the site asked for university degree confirmation but did not verify it. the value the price point was buying was the slower-paced product. tinder and bumble had moved the dating market toward unlimited swipe feeds by 2015. elitesingles staying with a curated daily-list model kept it relevant for users who had aged out of the swipe model or had never wanted to be on it. that audience supported a high subscription price for most of the decade.
~ how the parent collapsed ~
spark networks was a roll-up. christianmingle joined in 2014, jdate was the original 1997 brand, jswipe came in via a 2017 acquisition, zoosk was added in july 2019 for 258 million dollars, silversingles was a spinout of elitesingles's older-demographic segment. by 2022 spark was carrying significant debt and the active-user numbers across the portfolio were trending down. the company moved its listing from the NYSE to OTC markets and went through cost cuts. MGG investment group held the senior debt position.
in late 2025 MGG signaled it would not extend the credit facility. spark could not refinance. on january 16 2026 the berlin subsidiary filed for insolvency, which is the german equivalent of chapter 11 protection with creditor priority. the berlin court appointed a preliminary insolvency administrator. for the first three months the administrator looked for a buyer for elitesingles and the other affinitas brands. no buyer at the price the creditors wanted closed. the shutdown decision landed in april. user notification went out on april 28 with a 48-hour wind-down.
~ what happened to the rest ~
spark's other dating brands had different fates. zoosk continued operating in 2026 under a separate corporate structure that the spark-US side kept out of the berlin filing. christianmingle and jdate, the religious-community brands with sticky niche audiences, stayed live under spark-US ownership. silversingles, the older-demographic spinout of elitesingles, also continued operating. attractive world, the french brand affinitas had acquired in 2016, closed alongside elitesingles. eDarling, the original 2009 german brand, also shut down on the same april 30 date.
elitesingles is the cleanest 2026 example of a category death pattern that ran across the dating market in the post-tinder decade. the swipe feed model captured the high-volume user base. the slow curated model held a smaller paying audience but never grew the way the parent company had projected when it took on debt to roll up the portfolio. when the debt came due the audience could not service it. forty-eight hours of notice to a user who had been paying twenty dollars a month for six years and had ten thousand messages in a conversation thread is what the end of that math looked like.
