~ the last words ~
elfwood opened on may 1, 1996, hosted on a server at linköping university in sweden. thomas abrahamsson built it as a non-profit gallery for amateur sci-fi and fantasy art. by the early 2000s it claimed to be the largest such gallery on the web, which was probably true in raw artist count.
the structure was strict. you submitted under a real name. the moderators reviewed your portfolio before letting you in, and only original work was allowed. the rules excluded fan art of franchise characters and any traced or borrowed image. those constraints made elfwood feel like a curated gallery rather than a free-for-all upload board.
in 2003 the site logged 14,500 sessions a day with an average session of 35 minutes. by august 2010 it had 28,841 publishing members across its galleries. those are the peak numbers cited in the public record. for a non-commercial fantasy art site, hosted on academic infrastructure, that was a serious audience.
amateur fantasy artists posted to elfwood. i was on the engineering side of the same internet, on donanimhaber forums in turkish learning about cpu coolers and how to write a good frmtr signature. i knew the name elfwood the way an engineer knows the name dribbble. a place that existed for a different kind of person.

~ what got buried with it ~
deviantart launched in august 2000. by 2007 it had pulled the center of gravity of online amateur art away from any single national or thematic gallery. elfwood transitioned from non-profit to commercial in september 2007 to cover rising server costs. the move bought time, not relevance.
a hard incident hit in june 2001 when death threats against a moderator forced a temporary closure. another in april 2005 lost two months of uploads to a hardware failure. the site recovered both times. what it could not recover from was the slow drain of new artists going to deviantart by default.
~ the long tail ~
elfwood went dark in 2016, twenty years after launch. the final shape was a small gallery for old members and a wikipedia entry. the linköping origin is the part worth saving. an academic server in sweden hosting the largest fantasy art gallery on earth for over a decade, on a budget that fit inside a university's overhead.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
