~ the obituary ~
The Korea Education and Research Information Service builds most of the software Korean public schools actually touch, and in March 2018 it added a free learning management system called e학습터. The thing lived at cls.edunet.net as a wing of Edunet, KERIS's older education portal, and its stated purpose was administrative rather than exciting: close the gap between a well-served city classroom and an under-served rural one, and take some weight off the private tutoring bills that Korean parents carry. Press at the opening counted around 1.5 million student accounts.
Then April 2020 happened. Rather than postpone its school year, Korea moved it, declaring an 온라인 개학, an online school opening, that put every grade on the internet to a published schedule. e학습터 was one of the two official platforms that carried it, the other being its sibling 위두랑. Teachers built classrooms and took attendance through a web page. The load was what you would expect. On 16 April 2020 the Korean press reported partial access delays on e학습터 and complete access blocking on 위두랑, and KERIS spent that spring taking the service from a single set of cloud servers to twelve.
It kept growing for one more year. In March 2021 KERIS opened a live two-way video classroom inside it, the feature nobody had wanted in 2019 and everybody needed in 2020. That was the high-water mark. The notice went up on the service's own board on 29 August 2025, the video classrooms closed on 31 December 2025, and the rest of the site was switched off on 28 February 2026. Naver's Whale team announced in February 2026 that it would load part of the e학습터 content library into Whale Class, so some of the lesson videos outlived the thing that served them.
Turkey ran the same experiment in the same months on its own platform, EBA, and got the same result: a government education service sized for steady weekday traffic, asked overnight to hold an entire country's school day, buckling at the login spike while the ministry added capacity in public. I was in my mid thirties that spring and inside neither system, neither a student nor a teacher, so everything I have on e학습터 comes from its records and its traffic reports.

~ the two platforms ~
Korea's remote schooling rested on a pair of KERIS services, and the split between them confused parents for two years. e학습터 was the classroom, holding the lesson video and the grade book. 위두랑 was the community layer, closer to a class message board with projects attached. When the April 2020 traffic arrived the two failed differently, which is the part worth recording: e학습터 slowed down and stayed reachable, 위두랑 stopped accepting connections at all.
They did not end together either. 위두랑 still answers at rang.edunet.net, serving a full page off the same edunet.net domain that outlived its sibling. e학습터's own two hostnames, cls and cls1, no longer resolve.
~ the quiet part ~
The shutdown notice is dated 29 August 2025, six months ahead of the closing, and it is already a dead link. The only citation anyone has for e학습터's own death announcement points at a board on cls.edunet.net, which is one of the hostnames that stopped resolving. A public service closed and took its closing statement with it.
~ what is still standing ~
Naver's Whale team posted on 12 February 2026 that e학습터 content would be loaded into Whale Class, with more arriving on a schedule. That is the usual shape of a Korean public-sector shutdown: the state stops operating the platform and a private browser team inherits the library. The lesson videos are the part with a second life, including the KEDI material that KERIS had been carrying over from the broadcast middle-school era.
Edunet itself is fine. www.edunet.net was last modified the day before this grave was written, still serving the portal that e학습터 was built as a wing of.
