Dream SMP

2020 - 2023

two youtubers opened a private minecraft server in april 2020 for a handful of friends and it turned into a serialized drama with thirty characters and twenty story arcs. the plot was improvised on top of loosely scripted beats, and it played out across dozens of simultaneous twitch and youtube streams, so every viewer assembled their own version of it. one night in january 2021 a single stream of it held 650,000 people at once. dream said in march 2023 there would probably be no second season, and on 10 april the remaining members logged in and killed the ender dragon, which his own rules had kept off limits for three years.

In the spring of 2020 i was thirty six years old, working from home in Ankara on models that had nothing to do with entertainment. Somewhere in the same lockdown, several million people mostly half my age were watching teenagers hold a presidential election inside Minecraft. i learned what the Dream SMP was long after it was over, from writing this site.

It started in April 2020 as a private survival server that Dream and GeorgeNotFound opened for a few friends, hosted on a box that belonged to another member. Invite only, with no company behind it and no rights holder. Within months it had become a serialized drama that other Minecraft creators were flown into like a cast.

The players performed fictional versions of themselves. Major plot points were sketched in advance and everything between them was improvised on stream, which is closer to how professional wrestling is written than how television is. Characters could die three times before the death became permanent. By August 2021 the server had run more than twenty distinct story eras with over thirty characters in them.

The thing an engineer notices is that there was no platform. The story lived across dozens of simultaneous broadcasts, each one a different camera on the same events, and the viewer chose which one to watch. No edit existed. Nobody owned the master copy, because there was no master copy to own.

~ how it landed ~

The timing did most of the work. It opened weeks into a lockdown that had put an entire school-age audience at home with nothing to do and a Minecraft client already installed. What they found was not a video but a place with a schedule, where the people in it were live at the same time every day and something might happen while you were watching.

An education writer covering it in 2021 put the effect plainly, that the server kept millions of kids connected to a social world while the physical one was closed. i keep coming back to that sentence, because the thing delivering it was a survival game with no story mode and a friend group who decided to pretend.

~ the origin ~

In July 2020 one member founded L'Manburg, a breakaway state inside the server for the non-American players, and it fought a war of independence and won. It then held an election. A coalition formed on the spot between two candidates took it with 46 percent of the vote, and the loser's faction spent the following arc plotting a return. The nation had a flag and an anthem, and the people playing it took the constitutional details seriously enough that outside writers started covering it as theater.

The longest arc was about two music discs. Minecraft's discs are decorative items you play in a jukebox, worth nothing, and the entire central conflict of the server was two of them changing hands. That arc closed in January 2021 with the discs recovered and Dream imprisoned, and the stream carrying it peaked above 650,000 concurrent viewers, third highest in the history of Twitch at that point.

~ the day it died ~

The wind down took months. In November 2022 two of the leads ran four consecutive streams billed as the season one finale, and closed them by detonating the server. In March 2023 Dream said a second season was unlikely, and gave the honest reasons: everyone had grown into their own careers and the motivation was gone. Technoblade, one of the best known players on it, had died of cancer in June 2022.

On 10 April 2023 the remaining members logged in together for a farewell stream and went to fight the ender dragon, which is the closest thing Minecraft has to an ending and which Dream's own server rules had kept off limits for three years. They killed it in about six minutes. Before he logged off, TommyInnit walked over to Technoblade's house, which was still standing where he left it.

~ what replaced it ~

Every streamer now running a multi-creator narrative server is working from this template, and the fan economy around it was enormous while it lasted, running from animation up to full musicals written by teenagers about a fictional war in a block game. One member responded to the ending by photographing more than three hundred locations on the map and putting them on her own site, which is what people do with a place rather than with a show.

In October 2024, eighteen months after the shutdown, three of the players logged back in and streamed one more session to finish their characters' arcs properly. That is the part i find strange from the outside. The server was dead and they still owed the audience an ending, so they went back and delivered one.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
