Drawn to Death
~ the obituary ~
Every dead multiplayer game on this site has the same excuse available: nobody found it. Drawn to Death does not get that one. Sony gave it away to every PlayStation Plus subscriber on the day it launched, which is tens of millions of accounts handed a copy for nothing, and it still could not hold a room. That makes it the closest thing the category has to a controlled experiment.
i was thirty three in 2017 and the PS4 was not my machine, so this is another one read from outside. still, the question it answers is one i keep running into. Discovery is supposed to be the hard part. Here is what happens when discovery is free.
David Jaffe had made God of War and the Twisted Metal games at Sony. He left to set up The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency. Drawn to Death was the studio's first project, developed with Sony's San Diego Studio, and it looked like nothing else on the platform. Four players fighting inside the pages of a school exercise book, the whole thing drawn in ballpoint and marker as though a bored teenager had done it in the back of a lesson.
The art direction was not the problem and never was. by then plenty of people had said publicly that they liked how it looked. It released on 4 april 2017, PS4 only.

~ the giveaway ~
Being the free PlayStation Plus title for a month is the single largest distribution event available to a game that size. for whatever reason it is usually treated as a reward, but it is also a test, because it strips out price as an explanation for everything that follows. Nobody who skipped Drawn to Death skipped it over money.
What it bought was a crowd for a few weeks. Free arrivals are not the same as players, and a four-player arena shooter needs the second month more than the first. The people who download something because it costs nothing are exactly the people with nothing invested in coming back.
~ the slide ~
Reviews came in mixed and stayed there. Metacritic settled at 56. IGN called it a mean spirited, misguided mess and gave it 4 out of 10, while Push Square went the other way at 8 and called it a breath of fresh air, which is roughly the spread you get when a game has a strong personality and shaky mechanics underneath.
The tone was the argument. honestly, the game was loud and abusive by design, the characters insulted you constantly, and it was pitched as the thing that would cut through a market full of agreeable shooters. That works when the fighting underneath is good enough to keep you there through it. When it is not, the personality is just noise coming out of a menu you have stopped opening.
~ the day it died ~
The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency shut down in february 2018, less than a year after release, making Drawn to Death its first and last game. the sequence is clear enough on the record. The studio went before the game did.
It came off the PlayStation Store in North America and Japan by november 2018, so nobody new could get in even for money. Sony switched the servers off on 25 march 2019. There is no offline mode worth the name in a four-player arena game, so that date is the end of the object rather than the end of support.
~ the inheritance ~
Jaffe said out loud in 2022 that it had failed critically and commercially, which is a rarer sentence than it should be. Most people who ship something that does not work spend a decade explaining the marketing. more or less, he just said the thing.
bartletjones.com answers today with an SEO page about World of Warcraft strategy, a hundred and thirty kilobytes of generated text on somebody else's game. That is the actual inheritance. A studio name that lasted two years is now an expired domain doing keyword work, and the game it was set up to make cannot be bought or played by anyone.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.
from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
