Dogpile

1996 - 2001
dead us
a search engine that was not really a search engine. dogpile never crawled the web itself, it took your query and handed it to altavista and every other engine at once, then stitched the answers back together. in 1997 that was a smart hedge, because no single engine indexed enough of the web to trust on its own. then google indexed enough of the web to trust, and the entire reason for metasearch quietly evaporated. the domain still answers in 2026, monetized by a company that is not really running a search engine, which is the polite version of dead.

~ the obit ~

dogpile was a name from other people's browsers, not mine. i came online in turkey in 1998, and by then my path had already narrowed to altavista and then very quickly to google, the way most people's did. metasearch, the idea of one box that asked all the engines at once, was a solution to a problem i was too late to really feel. still, dogpile is worth a grave, because for a couple of years it answered a real question about how you were supposed to find anything on a web that no single index had fully mapped.

Aaron Flin built Dogpile in november 1996, reportedly out of frustration that different search engines gave such different results for the same query. so he wrote a site that did not have its own index at all. you typed your search, and Dogpile passed it to the big engines of the day at once, altavista and lycos among them, then collected what came back into one list. the name was a joke about everyone piling onto the same query at the same time, and it fit.

the business changed hands the way these things did. Go2net, which already ran the rival metacrawler, bought Dogpile in august 1999. Go2net then got swallowed by InfoSpace in 2000 in a deal valued in the billions, back when search portals were priced like the future. and then Google happened. once one engine indexed nearly the whole web and ranked it well, asking six weaker engines and merging their guesses stopped being clever and started being slower for no reason. by the early 2000s dogpile was a brand coasting, not a tool anyone reached for first.

~ the funny part ~

the funny part is that Dogpile never actually died in the way a grave implies. dogpile.com still loads in 2026. it passed from InfoSpace to a company called System1, the same graveyard-owner that holds the leftover names of half this era, and it shows you a page of ads wearing the costume of a search engine. what died was the reason to type your query there. metasearch made sense only while the web was too big for any one engine and too small for google to have finished the job. that window was maybe five years wide, and Dogpile lived in it.

~ what survived ~

metasearch did not vanish, it moved. every time a price site checks a dozen airlines at once, or a tool queries several models and merges the answers, that is the Dogpile shape, one query fanned out and the results pulled back together. the specific product lost because google won the underlying layer, but the pattern was sound. dogpile sits with [[altavista]] and [[webcrawler]], the engines whose real epitaph is that google did their job so well that nobody needed the alternatives.
