~ the goodbye ~
Dalil Masr means Egypt Guide, and the site was exactly that: a free directory of Egyptian businesses, sorted by trade, one page per entry. Furniture shops in one category and chartered accountants in another. Feed suppliers, courier firms, legal advisors, hotels, malls, nurseries, airlines. By 2022 the listing IDs ran past 11,800, so call it twelve thousand companies, each one a phone number and an address. Nothing resembling a review anywhere on the site.
The domain had already failed at this twice. In June 2001 dalilmasr.com was a 930-byte placeholder put up by a hosting company, and by 2004 it was serving the content of egypttradeindex.com, a guide "that will lead you to know anything about Egypt" with categories for factories and big stores. By December 2008 it had become a bare Apache directory listing with FrontPage extensions still enabled and nothing inside. The registration lapsed somewhere in that stretch, and the version that worked begins with a fresh registry record dated 4 February 2010, five weeks before the first capture of a page calling itself Dalil Masr.
Whoever ran it never put a personal name on it, although the Arabic footer does name a company: Dalil Masr described itself as a subsidiary of Globe On Limited and credited the same firm with the design. globeon.net does not answer either. I have never needed to find a plumber in Giza, which is the only real use for a site like this, so everything here is read off the pages themselves rather than remembered.

~ what it was made of ~
The last version ran on a free Bootstrap template from Colorlib, with the license comment still sitting in the HTML exactly where the designer found it: "Link back to Colorlib can't be removed. Template is licensed under CC BY 3.0." Underneath that was hand-rolled PHP with the admin folder exposed in every image path, a Hotjar session recorder, Google Analytics, a rotating banner carousel whose ads ranged from Dettol to a bowling alley, plus language switches along the top for Arabic, English, French, Spanish and Italian.
The non-Arabic editions were real: the English index on its own came to 123 KB of listings, with the same businesses transliterated by hand. Al Barbary Furniture, Shabrway Restaurant, Ahl El Darayb, the Egyptian Institute for Accounting and Auditing. A directory this size in five languages is somebody's unpaid evenings for a decade.
~ the last year ~
The whole directory was still being served on 9 September 2024, when a crawler took the English index at full size. Three months later, on 13 December, the same address answered with about 10 KB of empty WordPress under the heading "Welcome To Dalil Masr" and no listings behind it. By 22 March 2025 that was down to 574 bytes of GoDaddy parking, and by July to 283. Today the host resolves to nothing at all.
The registry record is the part that sits oddly. Somebody renewed the domain in January 2026 and has paid it through to February 2027. Fourteen years of a country's shop fronts, indexed by hand in five languages, stopped being served while the bill kept getting paid.
