Cute Overload

2005 - 2016
dead us
cute overload was a photoblog of small animals looking up at the camera, updated daily by meg frost from december 2005. it codified an internal "rules of cuteness" taxonomy that a lot of adjacent sites borrowed, and it hit its peak in the last cycle of the english-language mid-2000s blog boom. the farewell post went up on 18 january 2016 after a decade of running.

~ the last words ~

cute overload sat in a part of the mid-2000s english-language blogosphere i did not spend time in. animal photoblogs were a whole category on livejournal and typepad through 2005 to 2012, and cute overload was the most-cited example of the format. i was aware of it (close enough) the way i was aware of icanhascheezburger, from the memes that leaked out into hardware forums and msn away messages, not from actually reading the blog.

meg frost started the site in december 2005. the pitch was one photo a day of something small looking up at the camera, with a caption that mimicked baby talk. the site codified what it called the "rules of cuteness", things like "if it fits, i sits" and the paws-on-nose pose, into a running taxonomy that other cute-adjacent sites started borrowing.

at peak in 2011 quantcast measured roughly 33,700 visits per day. it won a 2006 webby people's voice for weblog and a 2007 bloggie for best american weblog (or whatever those were called). by then it had been picked up by cheezburger, the icanhascheezburger parent company that ran the cute/lolcat commercial internet at that scale.

~ what got buried with it ~

the farewell post went up on 18 january 2016 with the title "thank you for a decade of cute". frost was moving on. the blog stayed archived for a while and then quietly stopped serving. what got buried was the whole idea of a single-topic photoblog updated by a person with taste, on a schedule you could set your afternoon coffee break to (roughly). the format did not die with cute overload, but it lost its center of gravity when that one blog stopped updating.

~ the format after 2016 ~

the aesthetic did not disappear. it just moved from wordpress-and-typepad blogs to instagram accounts, and then to tiktok, where the same "look at this small animal" impulse became an entire content genre with algorithmic feeds and monetization built in from the first frame. cute overload was the last version of the format that felt authored by one person on a browser, writing captions between meetings. after 2016 the same impulse ran through infrastructure that was not built for slow reading.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
