ChaCha

2006 - 2016
dead us
chacha was a us-only sms search service from scott a. jones and brad bostic, launched september 1, 2006 in carmel, indiana. you texted a question to the short code 242-242 and a paid human guide texted back an answer. it raised about $58 million in venture money including from jeff bezos and peaked at thirty million monthly impressions in march 2009. ad revenue declined steadily after 2012 and the company shut the service on december 12, 2016.

~ the obituary ~

chacha was us-only at the carrier layer. its short code 242-242 only worked from us mobile networks, which is the kind of regional bound i hit a lot in the late 2000s when americans assumed everyone could just text the magic number from anywhere. in turkey we had no equivalent service, and the closest thing i used was msn messenger and google for the same job that chacha was charging guides to do over sms.

scott a. jones and brad bostic launched chacha on september 1, 2006 in carmel, indiana. the proposition was that you sent a question by sms to 242-242 and a human guide working from home read it and texted you back an answer inside a few minutes. answers were free at the user end. revenue came from sponsored answers and ad-supported web search on chacha.com. by march 2009 the service had 3.6 million users and was running thirty million impressions a month.

chacha peaked in 2012 with around three hundred seventy million monthly pageviews on chacha.com and roughly $20.5 million in annual revenue. the smartphone shift killed the sms model. by 2014 the staff had dropped from about a hundred at peak to a skeleton crew of a dozen. on november 23, 2016 the company discontinued the guide program for lack of funds, and on december 12, 2016 it shut down operations completely. the cause was declining advertising revenue against debt the company could no longer service.

~ what it was ~

the chacha business model was a paid-guide network at the user-facing front end and a search-results-and-curated-content site at the back. guides were home workers paid pennies per query to find an answer fast. the appeal was that this worked for people who wanted a real answer to a real question without wading through search-result pages, which in 2007 still meant scrolling past a lot of seo spam to get to the thing you needed. on a feature phone with a small screen and no real browser, that mattered.

~ the funny part ~

the funny part is that chacha solved the right problem for about three years and then the iphone solved it differently. once a phone could open a real browser and type a query into google, the value of paying a human to text you back an answer dropped to almost nothing. the company kept iterating with apps and ads, but the underlying use case was being absorbed by the same smartphone that had briefly looked like its growth opportunity.

~ what it became ~

chacha went offline on december 12, 2016. the domain has cycled through different parking pages since. the human-guided search idea did not really come back, since the labor economics that worked at sms-cost-per-query do not transfer to mobile chat or voice assistants where the per-query price drops to zero. ai assistants ten years later picked up the same question-and-answer use case for free, with a fraction of the latency and none of the human guides. carmel, indiana, no longer hosts a hundred-person tech startup. it once did.
