Carpooling.com

2001 - 2015
dead europe
carpooling.com started as a student project at TU munich in 2001 under the name mitfahrgelegenheit.de. by 2012 it was moving a million people a month across forty countries in europe. daimler put 10 million dollars into the company that year. blablacar bought it in april 2015 and folded the german brand into the french one. mitfahrgelegenheit went out the same way, the domain redirected to blablacar.de and stayed there.

carpooling.com was a european-continental product from the founding day. munich-german at the operator layer, DACH plus the EU seven at the user layer. it did not reach turkey at any meaningful scale, intercity carpool was a category that arrived in TR a decade later through blablacar. i was 17 in 2001 when the original mitfahrgelegenheit.de went online, on dial-up at home in turkey, and the next dozen years of long-distance travel in TR ran on the bus companies and the train, not on a website pairing drivers with passengers.

three students at TU munich, stefan weber with two classmates, put up the original mitfahrgelegenheit.de in 2001 as a thesis-adjacent side project. germany already had a print culture of ridesharing through Mitfahrzentrale offices that did the same matching by counter service for a fee, the website was the digital version of that kiosk. by 2003 it was the largest carpooling site in germany. by 2008 the founders had pulled the brand into a full-time company with offices in munich and paid staff.

the brand renamed to carpooling.com in 2011 when markus barnikel came in as CEO from yahoo. daimler put 10 mil dollars into the operation in 2012 and that year was the peak by every metric the company cited. the company reported one million trips per month across forty european countries, the largest network in the category. partnership with uber announced in 2013. then the german intercity-bus market got deregulated in january 2013 and flixbus and a handful of competitors moved into the lanes carpooling.com depended on. a 15 euro direct coach ticket with wifi is hard to compete with on a 200km route.

blablacar had been raising big rounds out of paris through 2014. blablacar bought carpooling.com in april 2015 for an undisclosed sum, folded the operation into its own brand, retired the carpooling.com name. mitfahrgelegenheit.de went out the same way, the redirect pointed at blablacar.de and stayed there. blablacar itself would later have a hard 2016-2018 stretch in europe as the bus competition kept biting into the business.

~ what mitfahrgelegenheit was for ~

the original product solved a friction problem the US never had: european countries with high petrol taxes and dense intercity demand where a driver going munich-to-stuttgart had an empty back seat and someone in munich needed to get to stuttgart on saturday. the print Mitfahrzentrale offices charged a flat fee to do the match, the website charged less and scaled past one city. by the 2010 era a typical carpooling.com listing was 15 to 20 euros for a seat that would cost 60 or more by bahn.

the part the US never replicated was the cultural side. germany had a multi-generation habit of riding with strangers across the country, the website inherited the trust assumption already in place. uber and lyft solved a different problem in-city last-mile and never tried to build the intercity carpooling muscle on top.

~ how the consolidation went ~

the april 2015 acquisition was framed as a european consolidation play. blablacar absorbed the carpooling.com user base and switched the interface to its own, the carpooling-branded domain redirected. by mid-2015 the operator was paris-only at the brand layer.

the 10 million dollar daimler stake from 2012 became part of the blablacar cap table when the acquisition closed, daimler retained a small position in the merged entity. the founders of mitfahrgelegenheit had already exited the operational side by 2013, they got a clean walk-away when the deal closed. the brand they built was the largest european carpool network for a year before flixbus arrived and changed the math, then it was a paris subsidiary nobody talked about.
