Bullet Messenger

2018 - 2019

bullet messenger, later renamed liaotianbao, was a chinese chat app that luo yonghao of smartisan launched in august 2018 to take a run at wechat. it signed up 4 million users in its first nine days and topped the app store, which was enough for people to start calling it a wechat challenger. the momentum did not hold, and a january 2019 relaunch that bolted a points-and-rewards scheme onto the thing pushed users away instead of pulling them in. on the 5th of march 2019 the team disbanded and the app was done, about seven months old.

~ the eulogy ~

i never lived inside wechat, so a wechat killer was always going to reach me as a headline and not as an app. in turkey my chat life ran through msn and then whatsapp, and the chinese super-app world where one app holds both your messages and your wallet stayed on the far side of a wall i only ever read about. Bullet Messenger was a nine-day story i watched from that distance.

Bullet Messenger, 子弹短信 in chinese, launched on the 20th of august 2018, put out by Luo Yonghao, the founder of the phone maker Smartisan, and built by a Beijing outfit called Kuairu Technology. the pitch was simple enough to travel. it stripped chat down to fast voice notes that showed up as text at the same time, so you could fire off a message without typing and the other side could read it without listening.

and for about a week and a half it looked real. Bullet Messenger hit 4 million users in its first nine days and sat at the top of the chinese app store, and people who watch that market started asking out loud whether anything could ever put a dent in WeChat. Tencent had owned chinese messaging for years by then. a newcomer pulling millions in a week was the kind of thing that was not supposed to happen.

it did not last past the winter. in january 2019 the app relaunched under a new name, Liaotianbao, roughly a chat helper, and bolted a points-and-rewards system onto the thing people had liked for being plain. the new version asked you to earn and spend little cash rewards, and it landed as clutter. the four million did not come back, and on the 5th of march 2019 the team stood down, dismissing most of its two hundred people and keeping around thirty. seven months, start to finish.

~ the nine days ~

but the nine-day number is the part worth sitting with. most apps that die never get a moment where the whole industry looks up. this one did. it proved that chinese users would try something new in enormous numbers if the pitch was clear, which was never really in doubt. what it could not prove was that they would stay, once the novelty wore off and the wechat-shaped hole in their day was already filled.

~ the collapse ~

the rename is where it actually came apart. Bullet Messenger worked because it did one thing without asking anything of you. Liaotianbao turned that into a coin-collecting game, the sort of growth trick that reads as desperate the moment users notice it. Luo Yonghao had his own troubles by then, with Smartisan itself running out of money. a messenger with no parent to keep feeding it does not get a second year, and this one was gone before it had a real first one.

~ what it proved ~

the whole thing lasted long enough to leave one lesson behind. a super-app is not really an app, it is a habit that has swallowed a dozen other habits, and you cannot pull someone out of it with a cleaner inbox. Bullet Messenger had the better idea for about nine days. WeChat had everything else, and everything else is what people actually could not leave. that is why the grave is short and the memory of it shorter.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
