BitTorrent Sync

~ the obituary ~
btsync landed in a category i was watching closely as an engineer. running a peer-to-peer sync layer directly between two of my own machines, with no cloud middleman in the path, was exactly the shape i wanted. by 2013 dropbox already had the mind-share, and the ttnet line at home in ankara was reliable enough that i never built out a full btsync-based backup pipeline. i knew the product though, and i knew the trade it was making.
bittorrent inc. announced it on 24 january 2013 as a distributed syncing product to help manage personal files between multiple computers. the original author was konstantin lissounov. the public alpha opened on 23 april 2013 for anyone who wanted to try it. it exited beta as a commercial product on 3 march 2015 with paid pro tiers for larger folders and more devices.
the growth was steady rather than viral. by the middle of 2016 the parent company decided the product needed a home of its own. on 1 june 2016 bittorrent inc. spun it out as resilio inc. and renamed the client resilio sync. that was the end of the btsync brand.
~ the case file ~
| Born | 24 January 2013 as a BitTorrent Inc. announcement |
|---|---|
| Peak | March 2015 commercial launch after two years of alpha and beta |
| Killed | 1 June 2016, spun out as Resilio Inc. and renamed Resilio Sync |
| Lifespan | three years and four months under the BitTorrent brand |
| Made by | BitTorrent Inc., original author Konstantin Lissounov |
| Killed by | a corporate spinoff |
~ how it landed ~
the design was clean. bittorrent had spent a decade on a swarm protocol that could reliably move a huge file between strangers across the public internet. btsync used the same core plumbing but pointed it at a much smaller trust boundary, usually a personal set of two or three devices you already owned, with an aes-128 secret shared between them. no account, and no server-side folder view. even bittorrent inc. could not see the metadata.
for someone with a home ttnet line and a work laptop, and no interest in feeding personal files to dropbox, that was a real proposition. the client shipped for the major desktop platforms and then for mobile. the alpha in april 2013 had a small but real engineer following inside months, and bittorrent inc. treated it as a foundational product line before pushing the commercial launch in march 2015.
~ the spinoff ~
on 1 june 2016 bittorrent inc. announced that btsync and its team were being spun out as an independent company called resilio inc. eric klinker, the outgoing bittorrent ceo, took charge of the new entity. the product itself would be renamed to resilio sync and the old btsync brand would be retired. the two entities kept a licensing relationship for the underlying protocol but nothing else.
the reason bittorrent inc. gave was strategic focus. the parent wanted to concentrate on the consumer torrent client and its music and live-streaming ambitions of that period, and it did not want to run a b2b sync business alongside them. the spinout format let the sync team keep going without carrying that internal cost.
~ what carried over ~
resilio sync is still shipping in 2026. the october 2025 build is still on the site and the freemium tier still works. what disappeared with the rename was the specific consumer-hero framing that btsync had carried in 2013 and 2014. use a torrent protocol to keep your own files in sync without letting a saas company hold them. the resilio product carries a much more enterprise-shaped positioning today. the ideology underneath is the same but the badge on the tin is different.
