Bilddagboken

dead europe
bilddagboken was the swedish photo-diary community founded in may 2004 by sebastian björkelid and joakim grönvall in gothenburg. it grew into the first big picture-first virtual community in sweden and hit more than 100,000 simultaneously logged-in users on 12 october 2008. wyatt media group took a 40 percent stake in february 2007. the site rebranded to dayviews on 2 may 2011 in an attempt to broaden past the teen diary framing. announcement of shutdown came in july 2017 with facebook and instagram cited as the reason. adhype bought the corpse in august 2017 and kept the domain up as a dormant photo archive.

~ the obit ~

swedish teens ran their whole social lives on bilddagboken through the 2005 to 2010 window. that was not my geography or my language. from ankara on ttnet i knew flickr and photobucket by name and hi5 was where turks were logging photos. sweden built its own vertical for it and the vertical won the swedish teen bracket outright. i learned about bilddagboken years after the fact, reading through the european photo-community shutdowns that piled up in the late 2010s.

sebastian björkelid and joakim grönvall started bilddagboken in may 2004 in gothenburg. the name translates to picture diary. the pitch was simple. one photo a day with a caption and a comment thread. no profile bio and no like button in the modern sense. just a stream of daily images pinned to a personal page. wyatt media group came in with a 40 percent stake in february 2007.

peak came in the second half of 2008. on 25 may that year the platform recorded 94,000 members logged in at the same time. by 12 october the concurrent figure crossed 100,000. by january 2010 the accumulated numbers were roughly 268 million uploaded images across 1.335 million accounts. for a country of ten million people this was a saturating footprint on the teen bracket. the equivalent number in a bigger country would have been a facebook-scale event.

~ the rebrand ~

on 2 may 2011 the site swapped its name to dayviews. the diary framing had aged into a bracket that facebook was already colonizing (or so i heard). the rebrand aimed the product at a broader adult photo-sharing audience. it did not work. the swedish teens who had made bilddagboken a cultural fact were moving to facebook first and then to instagram from 2012 onward. dayviews limped through the 2013 to 2016 window with declining daily posts and a domain that increasingly felt like an old yearbook nobody opened.

~ the postmortem ~

in july 2017 the operators announced dayviews would shut down. the target date was 1 september 2017. everything on the platform would go with it. all posts and all images. users had two months to download their pictures with any third-party backup tool they could find, and rgson published a command-line scraper on github during the window. elle sweden and göteborgs-posten wrote it up as the end of a swedish internet institution.

adhype, then called sesn, bought the corpse in august 2017 before the wipe date landed. the site was kept online in dormant mode, no editorial staff, no product roadmap, just the archive itself sitting on a domain. dayviews.com in 2026 still resolves. you can log in and look at old albums. nobody has posted a new photo in years. this is the zombie-alive part of the story, the part where the shutdown announcement turned out to be more definitive than the corporate reality that followed.

~ what got buried ~

the 268 million images were the visual diary of a generation of swedish teens between 2005 and 2011. clothes, hairstyles, mid-2000s room decor, msn-era emoji graffiti in comment threads. facebook and instagram inherited the use case but not the archive. sweden's national archives (statens arkiv) opened a preservation initiative in 2024 and started collecting scraped copies of the platform because no official archive existed. the corporate rescue in august 2017 saved the domain but did not preserve the culture that had once run on it.
