~ the eulogy ~
the mighty mouse arrived in august 2005 as apple's quiet admission that single-button mice were a religion the rest of the world had stopped attending. the shell looked like the pro mouse and the apple mouse before it, smooth, white, no visible seams. underneath the shell sat capacitive sensors on the top half and squeeze sensors on the sides, with a small scroll ball set into the front. apple insisted the user-visible model was still one surface, so right-clicks worked only when your left finger was not also resting on the case. it was multi-button as long as you held your hand correctly.
the scroll ball was the part everyone remembers. a small grey pearl set flush with the shell that scrolled in four directions. it was also impossible to clean. lint and skin oil collected on the rollers under the ball within months, and the most common symptom was scrolling that worked upward but refused to go down. the fix was to flip the mouse over and rub it firmly on a piece of paper, which sometimes worked. apple never opened the assembly. the ball was sealed.
the wireless model launched in 2006 with bluetooth and two AA batteries. it shipped standard with every iMac and Mac Pro through 2009. in 2008 a trademark dispute with man and machine inc. cost apple the mighty mouse name and the product was quietly relabeled apple mouse on the box. on october 20, 2009 the magic mouse arrived with a flat multi-touch surface and the wireless mighty mouse was retired the same day. the wired version lingered as an accessory until june 2017.

~ the scroll ball ~
the scroll ball is the only hardware detail that survived in mac forum lore. it was the first apple input device whose failure mode was a meme. apple's own support article suggested cleaning it by holding the mouse upside down and scrolling on a damp cloth, which felt like an admission that the design had a known half-life. the magic mouse solved the problem by deleting the mechanism entirely and putting capacitive touch on the top shell.
~ what it ended ~
apple shipped one-button mice from the lisa in 1983 through to the apple mouse in 2003. twenty-two years of that orthodoxy ended the day the mighty mouse arrived with its hidden right-click. the press release pretended this was natural, but every mac power user had been buying logitech and microsoft mice for years to escape the missing button. the mighty mouse closed the gap, broke after a few months, and then got replaced by something that worked.
