~ the obituary ~
Amazon Destinations was US-only at the address bar, so it never really had a chance to reach me in Turkey. It also barely lasted long enough to reach anyone. This was Amazon's try at hotel booking, launched in April 2015 and gone by that October, roughly six months from open to closed.
The idea was narrow on purpose. Instead of fighting the whole travel market at once, Destinations sold weekend getaways within driving distance of a few American cities, the kind of short trip you take without booking a flight. It ran on its own site at travel.amazon.com and inside the Amazon Local app, with hotel deals and maps and the same one-account checkout people already trusted for everything else.
It did not work. On 13 October 2015 Amazon quietly stopped selling reservations, with no press release and no farewell page. When reporters asked, an Amazon spokesperson gave the line every failed experiment gets: they had learned a lot, and had decided to discontinue it.

~ the climb ~
Calling it a rise is generous. Amazon walked into a market where Expedia and Priceline had spent fifteen years building hotel supply and the muscle memory of travelers who already knew where to book. Amazon's advantage everywhere else was selection and price, and in hotels it arrived with neither. It had a login and a driving radius.
~ the actual end ~
There was no dramatic collapse, because there was nothing much to collapse. Six months of soft numbers was enough for a company that closes things without sentiment. The product simply stopped taking bookings and the URL went dark. Even the shutdown made barely any noise, which for a company Amazon's size is its own kind of verdict.
~ the funny part ~
Amazon is famous for tolerating years of losses on things it believes in. It gave Destinations half a year. That gap tells you how little it believed. The company would keep circling travel in other forms later, but the standalone hotel storefront was one of those rare Amazon products that got tried and buried inside a single calendar year, back when almost nobody was watching.
