Amazon Cloud Drive

2011 - 2023
dead us
amazon cloud drive launched in march 2011 as amazon's bet that the photo and document storage market would be a separate consumer product rather than a sub-feature of prime. it offered unlimited photo storage to prime members from 2014, got rebranded to amazon drive in 2017, and shut down for non-photo files on december 31, 2023. amazon photos absorbed the surviving function.

~ the eulogy ~

amazon cloud drive showed up in 2011 and never fully arrived in turkey. amazon did not open a turkish marketplace until 2018, and by then my cloud storage habits were already a decade of dropbox plus google drive plus icloud for the apple ecosystem. cloud drive was an american default, bundled in for prime members who treated amazon as a one-stop hub for everything from shopping to media storage.

the product itself was always slightly half-formed. it launched in march 2011 as a general-purpose 5gb free cloud locker, with paid tiers and an early adopter window of unlimited storage that amazon later walked back. the killer feature, when it arrived in november 2014, was unlimited photo storage for prime members, which made amazon photos a credible competitor to google photos for anyone who already had prime for the shipping. the document and arbitrary-file side never had the same gravity.

in 2017 amazon renamed the product to amazon drive and dropped the unlimited document tier. the rebrand was the first quiet signal that the company was retreating to the photos-only use case where prime gave it a structural reason to exist.

~ the unraveling ~

by 2020 the apps stopped getting meaningful updates. the windows client was buggy. the mobile experience was a thin wrapper around amazon photos with a sidebar for other files. the web ui still worked but felt like a 2014 product that had stopped getting design attention. amazon was clearly deciding whether to invest or retire it.

~ what really happened ~

on july 29, 2022, amazon announced the discontinuation. uploads ended january 31, 2023. file access continued through december 31, 2023, after which non-photo files became inaccessible without manual export. amazon photos absorbed the photo storage side and continues to exist as a separate consumer product for prime members. the cloud drive brand is gone.

the shutdown was orderly by cloud-storage standards. users had 17 months of warning. very few complained, because by 2023 almost nobody was actively using cloud drive for non-photo storage. the product had been functionally dormant for years before amazon officially turned the key.

a rose fades by morning. a wreath stays on this grave for good, with your name on it.

from $1, paid once through stripe. it keeps the graveyard running: the hosting and the nightly digging. adopt it and the headstone reads "maintained in memory by" you. the groundskeeper plants new wreaths at the next tending, usually within a day.
