eBaum's World

still kicking since 2001
still alive (hanging-on) us
the watermark site. eric bauman slapped his logo on other people's flash cartoons and videos, half the early web declared war on him, and the site got sold for tens of millions anyway. bauman is long gone, the wars are forgotten, and ebaumsworld.com is still posting galleries in 2026 while most of the sites that hated it are in the ground.

~ what it is ~

eBaum's World launched in 2001 out of Rochester, New York, run by eric bauman and his father neil. it was a humor portal, the kind the early 2000s web was full of. flash cartoons, prank videos, soundboards, and web games, all on one page with a red logo. before youtube existed, sites like this were where funny things on the internet lived, and ebaum's was one of the biggest.

i remember it from the internet cafe years in turkey, around 2003 to 2005. you did not go looking for ebaum's world, it found you. somebody two computers over was playing a soundboard prank call, and the file had the ebaum's watermark in the corner. that watermark was on half of everything funny back then, which turned out to be exactly the problem.

~ the watermark wars ~

the site's core method was reposting. content made elsewhere showed up on ebaum's with the ebaum's logo stamped on it, and the ad revenue stayed in rochester. in 2006 this boiled over into an actual war with ytmnd and other communities, complete with ddos attacks and death threats. something awful caught the site cropping watermarks off images. the creator of animator vs. animation took 250 dollars from bauman for his cartoon, then said publicly that he had fallen into a trap.

for a few years ebaum was maybe the single most hated man on the english-speaking internet. forums organized against the site. the word "ebaum" became shorthand for content theft. and none of it mattered commercially, because the audience that clicked was much bigger than the audience that was angry.

~ the sale ~

in august 2007 a company called handheld entertainment, later zvue, bought ebaum's world for 15 million dollars up front, plus stock, plus up to 52.5 million more over three years. this remains one of the funniest acquisition prices of the era, because the asset was a repost site with a hostile reputation. in january 2009 zvue fired bauman and his whole staff. the founder was out of his own site less than two years after cashing in.

ownership kept shuffling after that. since 2016 the controlling interest sits with literally media, the israeli company that also owns know your meme, cheezburger, and cracked. the great meme sites of the 2000s, gathered under one roof like retired wrestlers.

~ what almost killed it ~

youtube took the videos, reddit took the galleries, and the whole one-stop humor portal model quietly stopped making sense around 2010. break.com died. collegehumor died as a website. albino blacksheep froze when flash was shut off. by every rule of that generation of sites, ebaum's world should be a parked domain.

instead it kept doing the one thing it always did, packaging other people's content into galleries, and that turned out to be a business you can run forever at low cost. the site that survived is not the site people hated. it is a content mill wearing the old name. but the checks clear and the servers stay on.

~ why it still matters ~

i checked while writing this. there are galleries on the front page dated this week. twenty five years of continuous operation for a site whose founding controversy was whether it deserved to exist at all.

ebaum's world matters as a fossil record of how the internet worked before platforms. attribution was a fistfight, distribution was whoever had the traffic, and the guy with the watermark got paid. every argument we now have about ai scraping and reposting accounts on instagram happened first, in miniature, around this one site from rochester. the war ended. nobody apologized. the watermark is still there.

~ leave a tribute ~

it survived. tell us how you used it. anonymous welcome.

outlived these graves: Albino Blacksheep, Break.com, CollegeHumor
