Al Jazeera America

2013 - 2016
dead us
al jazeera america was a us-only cable news channel built by al jazeera media network to convert qatar's roughly five hundred million dollar purchase of current tv into a serious american longform-news operation. it launched august 20, 2013 with about eight hundred staff, twelve us bureaus, and an editorial mandate to do peabody-tier reporting without the prime-time-shouting-match format. it never reached the audience numbers that american cable news economics required. al jazeera media network shut it down april 12, 2016 after qatar's broader budget cuts in the lower-oil environment made the venture impossible to sustain.

al jazeera america never reached turkey at meaningful scale. it was a us cable bundle channel by design, broadcast through carriage deals inherited from current tv, with no international satellite feed and no streaming arm i could have subscribed to from ankara. al jazeera english was the brand i had access to. al jazeera america was a separate operation with separate hosts, separate bureaus, and a separate editorial chain of command, and that operation only existed inside the united states.

the channel launched at three pm eastern on august 20, 2013, taking over the cable slot that current tv had vacated one minute earlier. al jazeera media network had paid roughly five hundred million dollars to al gore and joel hyatt in january 2013 specifically to get that cable carriage. the new operation came online with about eight hundred staff, twelve us news bureaus, and a manhattan center headquarters. the editorial pitch was longform american news without the cable shouting match. real reporting, real investigative segments, no panel screaming at each other in split-screen.

the journalism was actually good. al jazeera america won multiple peabody awards and emmy awards during its thirty-two month run. the investigative show fault lines and the news magazine america tonight were both regularly cited inside the media industry as examples of cable news done seriously. ali velshi anchored a primetime economics show. the stream did social-media-driven discussion segments that read as a decade ahead of where most cable news was at the time. the staff was working at a level the parent network could be proud of. none of that translated into the prime-time audience numbers that american cable news economics required.

~ how it landed ~

average daily viewership for al jazeera america sat between twenty and forty thousand in most measurement periods. that was lower than what current tv had been doing in its post-olbermann decline. the al jazeera brand had its own complications in the post-2001 american news environment, where parts of the cable-bundle audience still associated the parent network with the bush-era characterizations rather than with the actual reporting that had won the network international awards. distribution stayed thin. time warner cable had dropped the slot within hours of the august 2013 transition, citing contract grounds, taking out about eleven million homes on day one. other providers carried it but at the back end of the lineup where casual scrolling rarely landed.

internally the channel had its own troubles. ehab al shihabi started as ceo and was demoted to coo in may 2015 after staff complaints. al anstey replaced him. there were lawsuits from former staff alleging a hostile workplace and a sexism complaint that became a separate news cycle. the editorial side was producing strong work. the management side was producing a stream of bad-news headlines that the channel's own competitors covered with some enthusiasm.

~ the funding collapse ~

the real cause of death was external. al jazeera media network is funded by the qatari government, and qatar's national budget is funded by natural gas and oil revenues. starting in 2014 oil prices collapsed from around a hundred dollars per barrel toward forty. that collapse persisted through 2015. qatar's discretionary spending on overseas media projects became impossible to defend internally against the budget pressure. al jazeera america was the most expensive of those overseas projects and the one with the worst audience-per-dollar ratio.

on january 13, 2016 al jazeera media network announced the channel would shut down. the final broadcast aired april 12, 2016. about seven hundred staff lost their jobs. the manhattan center bureau closed. the twelve us bureaus closed. al jazeera english picked up some of the american coverage capacity but at a fraction of the headcount. the parent network said it would invest in digital american expansion instead, including aj+, the social-video brand that had launched in 2014 and was actually working at the audience level the cable channel never reached.

~ what got buried with it ~

the longform reporting got buried with the channel. america tonight produced multi-part investigations on subjects that cnn and msnbc could not afford to staff at that depth. fault lines produced hour-long pieces on us policing, immigration enforcement, and foreign policy that were the kind of work cable news mostly stopped doing after the 2008 financial crisis. when the channel closed those formats went with it. some of the reporters landed at vice, some at the guardian us, some at the new york times. the showcase formats themselves did not survive the transition.

the lesson the cable news industry took from al jazeera america was that you cannot buy your way into american prime-time without the brand alignment and the prime-time-friendly format, no matter how much money or how good the journalism is. half a billion dollars bought thirty-two months of cable carriage and a peabody shelf. it did not buy a sustainable audience. the slot the channel occupied on the cable lineup is now mostly absorbed by other networks. aj+ continued as a digital-first operation under al jazeera media network's american capacity and is still publishing in 2026.
