~ the last words ~
i missed acfun. the chinese internet at acfun's peak was running on infrastructure i had no reason to touch from ankara, an acg-themed video portal addressed to a mandarin-speaking audience in beijing and shanghai. honestly, danmu (the bullet-comment overlay) was already a known japanese-niconico thing by the time acfun adapted it for china in '07, but the format reached me later as a youtube-comments artifact rather than as a daily habit. i never logged in (or whatever it was called).
anyway, acfun started june '07 in beijing as a small video upload board built on sina video as the playback layer. the acronym was an acg-genre nod that mandarin-language users dropped almost immediately. in those days. early viewers were university-age anime fans and clip-mod hobbyists posting amv edits with running real-time comments. by may '10 the upload count crossed 100,000 submissions. by '14 it cleared one million.
the danmu (or "bullet curtain") format was the defining cultural fact about acfun. comments overlaid the video frame in real time and scrolled across the screen as if from a side-scrolling shoot-em-up, with timestamped synchronization between every viewer's comment track and the playback head. it produced a layered viewing experience where a clip from naruto or counter-strike played underneath a moving wall of viewer reaction text from hundreds of accounts spread across multiple replay years.
look, bilibili spun off acfun in june 2009 as a fork built by early acfun users who wanted a cleaner version of the same idea. within a few years bilibili overtook the parent in upload volume and creator mindshare. for the chinese acg internet of the early 2010s, acfun was the older sibling that had founded the format and bilibili was the newer site that had executed it better. financial troubles mounted at acfun across the 2014 to 2017 window. the company shed staff and skipped vendor payments.
~ the record ~
| Born | June 2007 as an ACG-themed video site on Sina Video infrastructure |
|---|---|
| Peak | 1 million video submissions by 2014, the danmu format running ahead of Bilibili |
| Killed | 2 February 2018 when Alibaba Cloud non-renewed the domain registration |
| Lifespan | about ten years and seven months for the original arc |
| Made by | a small Beijing team, later under various private holdings |
| Killed by | financial distress that led to the Alibaba Cloud domain non-renewal |
~ the domain crash ~
this part you had to be in china for, and i was not. honestly, 2 february 2018 the acfun.cn domain registration came due. alibaba cloud (the registrar) declined to renew it, with failure to pay being the most-cited explanation. the site went dark from china at the close of the business day. for the existing acfun community it was the first time the whole platform had gone offline at once across the public-facing entrypoint.
access came back ten days later on february 12 after some emergency negotiation, but the financial trajectory was already terminal. the user base had been drifting to bilibili for years and the domain-down outage accelerated whatever loyalty was left. kuaishou (the short-video platform) acquired acfun mid 2018 as a brand-and-archive transaction. the post-acquisition acfun is a separate operation under a different corporate parent with a different content strategy. the original community arc is what ended february '18.
~ the long shadow ~
bilibili kept the danmu format and grew it into a top-tier chinese video platform with an ipo on nasdaq in '18, which gave the format the financial vehicle it needed to outrun its origins. niconico in japan kept running on its own timeline. acfun is now the historical-first credit cited in retrospective coverage of bullet-comment video, the site that brought the format from niconico to the chinese language stack before bilibili built it into a billion-dollar business.
