15.ai

2020 - 2022
dead
15.ai was an anonymous mit-affiliated researcher's free text-to-speech site, online march 2 2020 and silent by september 2022. it cloned the voices of characters like glados and sponge bob from a few seconds of training audio. the january 2022 voiceverse nft scandal (a blockchain startup using 15.ai voices without credit, then selling them as nfts) pulled the creator into a legal and copyright thicket. the site went offline that september and never came back. the creator briefly relaunched as 15.dev in 2025, then closed that too in may 2026.

~ the obituary ~

i did not use 15.ai. it surfaced for me in 2026 through a reader submission on the rip.so dead-things form, a single-word "dead" with no story attached. the name had not crossed my desk before. i looked it up after.

15.ai launched on march 2 2020 as a free web tts site, run by an anonymous mit-affiliated researcher known only as "15". the pitch was that you could clone a fictional character's voice from around fifteen seconds of training audio, then have it speak any short line of text with rough emotional control over tone. the catalog of voiced characters drew from animated and game culture, glados from portal, twilight sparkle from my little pony, sponge bob square pants, the cast of team fortress 2. the site had no account system and no ads. it cost nothing to use.

by may 2020 the service had served over 4.2 million generated audio files. the creator was paying around twelve thousand dollars a month in aws hosting out of pocket. that scale is the part most people outside the fandom did not realize. it sat ahead of the elevenlabs commercial-tts wave by two years, with emotional synthesis at a quality level that consumer products would not catch up to until 2023 or so.

this is the part i was not around for. the legal pressure that ended 15.ai built up slowly through 2021 and 2022. character voice rights and training-data attribution were already unresolved questions at that point, and the site sat in the middle of all of it without any corporate cover behind it.

~ the voiceverse thing ~

in january 2022 a blockchain startup called voiceverse minted nft "voice tokens" using audio that had been generated through 15.ai. they marketed the tokens as their own emotional-tts technology. the unmasking came when one of their demo clips was traced back to a 15.ai-generated my little pony voice and confronted publicly. voiceverse's response was that their marketing team had "rushed the demo".

it landed in fandom-twitter and the ai-incidents press through early 2022. the immediate damage to 15.ai was that its non-commercial free-use license was now public enough to be ignored at commercial scale, and the legal landscape around its training data became visibly hostile. the creator stopped posting to the site's news log in the months that followed.

~ what really happened ~

the site went offline in september 2022. the creator cited "ai copyright concerns" and did not give a precise return date. the underlying model and code were never released, and the anonymous identity stayed unbroken. there was no farewell stream, no acquisition. the site just stopped responding.

this part i was not around for. in those days the ai-tts wave was about to break wide open with elevenlabs in late 2022 and the whisper-class open-source models in 2023. 15.ai had sat slightly ahead of all of that, on a free site that did not survive the legal moment its early existence had created.

~ what carried over ~

the creator launched a successor called 15.dev on may 18 2025 with most of the my little pony catalog and the same emotional-tts mechanic. it ran for almost exactly a year before closing on may 28 2026 so the creator could move on to a fandom marketplace project called artist alley. that closure barely made the press.

in the bigger picture, 15.ai was the consumer-facing proof that emotional speech synthesis from very small training samples was already possible in 2020. one anonymous researcher on a personal aws budget, two years ahead of the commercial wave. the legal grey zone that allowed it to exist that way did not survive past the first commercial nft heist.
